SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving team posted an 8-2 dual record during the two-day South Dakota State Quad-Duals held at the Midco Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday.
The men's team posted a perfect 4-0 mark earning duals wins each day over St. Cloud State and rival South Dakota State. Meanwhile, the women's team also posted dual victories over St. Cloud State and South Dakota State while suffering setbacks to Northern Iowa, with Saturday's being by only one point.
Saturday, South Dakota men posted wins over St. Cloud State (156-87) and South Dakota State (127-116) after scoring victories of 150-93 over St. Cloud State and 147.5-95.5 over the Jackrabbits on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Coyote women earned victories over St. Cloud State (172-71) and South Dakota State (195-46) on Saturday after triumphs of 159-84 and 181-60 on Friday over St. Cloud State and SDSU, respectively. Northern Iowa tripped the Coyotes 122-121 on Saturday after posting a 138-105 win on Friday.
The men had a total of 10 first place efforts over the two days, getting nine individuals wins and a single relay victory. The women's squad, meanwhile, had seven first place efforts over the two days, six individual and one relay.
Multiple individual victories over the two days came from
Elbert Chuang,
Jacob Won and
Sarah Schank.
Schank, a senior, swept the diving competition on both days, and was close to consistent with her scores tallying 244.60 and 265.25 in the one-meter and three-meter events, respectively on Saturday after recording 238.25 and 265.30 on Friday.
Chuang, a sophomore, swam to victories in the 200 IM (1:57.43) and 200 breaststroke (2:09.37) while also swimming a leg on the Coyotes winning 200 free relay, joining
Jake Leichner,
Brady Torborg and
Charlie Bean.
Won, a freshman, continued his strong start to his collegiate career with a trio of individual victories in the 1,000 free (9:47.57), 500 free (4:43.99) and the 200 butterfly (1:57.31). His 1,000 free time moves into sixth on the school's top-10 charts.
More individual victories for South Dakota came from
Mark Vanderzee (1,650 free),
Jared Thorson (50 free),
Griffin Wolner (400 IM) and
James Ryan (100 breaststroke). Women's titles came from
Morgan Holt (200 butterfly) and
Cassie Ketterling (200 IM) while the 400 free relay of
Katie Coleman,
Meghan Atwell,
Taylor Kidd and
Jordyn Schnell won in 3:34.98.
The Coyotes had a combined 21 second and third place finishes each in individual events over the course of the two-day meet.
Two more performances cracked the Coyote Top-10 charts as
Isabelle Davenport jumped from ninth to sixth on the 100 breaststroke chart with her 1:05.75 clocking that resulted in a second place finish.
Lucie Anderson swam 2:07.82 in the 200 backstroke to move into eighth on the top-10 chart.
The Coyote men and women will be back in the pool at the Hawkeye Invite in Iowa City that runs November 15-17.
