South Dakota hosts South Dakota State in its regular season finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
The Promotions
It's another South Dakota Showdown Series game with fans encouraged to wear red to support the Coyotes. It's also the regular season finale in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. In honor of his retirement, University of South Dakota President James W. Abbott will be recognized at the game for his 21 years of service. The first 1,200 students to the game will receive President Abbott G.O.A.T. T-shirts.
Stay tuned for a halftime performance by the incredible frisbee dogs. Cheer on the performing dogs as they run, jump and chase the flying frisbee.
The Game
The winner of Wednesday's game will likely determine the winner of the top seed at the Summit League Tournament on March 3. A Coyote win would make USD the only undefeated league team with an outright title. A Jackrabbit win, coupled with another win at Fort Wayne on Saturday, would create a shared title between the two teams. In the second scenario, South Dakota State wins the tiebreaker for the top seed based on RPI.
The Coyotes
South Dakota (23-5, 13-0 Summit) looks to become the first undefeated Summit League champion since 1993-94. After clinching at least a share of the Summit League title on Saturday, the Coyotes have won three of the last four Summit League regular season titles. The key to the Coyotes' success with a 17-game winning streak has been the team's well-balanced attack. South Dakota had nine different players lead the team in scoring for a game, can score from inside and out, and turns teams over 18 times a game to create offensive momentum. Four Coyotes are averaging double figures in Summit League play led by sophomore guard
Ciara Duffy's 14.9 points per game. Joining her are junior guard
Allison Arens with 13.4, senior guard
Jasmine Trimboli's 10.8 points and junior guard
Jaycee Bradley's 10.3.
The Jackrabbits
South Dakota State (22-5, 11-1 Summit) looks to avenge its only loss of 2018, a 67-61 decision to USD in Brookings back on Jan. 25. In the six games since the first meeting with South Dakota, the Jackrabbits have topped Summit foes by an average of 35.6 points per game. The Jackrabbits are paced by the junior guard tandem of Macy Miller and Madison Guebert with 18 and 15.1 points per game, respectively. Wednesday will also be freshman forward Myah Selland's third game back after missing seven contests, including the first meeting with USD. Selland scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes at Western Illinois.
The Series
In the last 10 meetings between the programs, the Coyotes hold a 6-4 edge over the Jackrabbits including a 67-61 win inside Frost Arena earlier this year. The Coyotes have won the last three at home against the Jackrabbits, but South Dakota State leads the all-time series 55-28.
One Last Thing
The Coyotes rank in the top-30 of the nation for all three shooting percentage categories while leading the league in both free throw and field goal percentage. South Dakota ranks third for free-throw percentage (80.5), 12th nationally for field-goal percentage (47.5) and 26th for 3-point field goal percentage (37.1).
