Coyotes, Jackrabbits clash in Summit Championship

WBB vs. SDSU

03.05.2018

The top-seeded South Dakota and second-seeded South Dakota State have reached the Summit League Tournament championship held at 1 p.m. Tuesday inside the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

The Game
Championship Tuesday has evolved into an all-South Dakota final. The Coyotes, undefeated in the Summit Regular season, enter with the top seed for their third meeting against the second seed Jackrabbits. South Dakota swept the regular season games, winning by six and five points, respectively, in the first two meetings. The Coyotes look to win the Summit League regular season and tournament titles in the same season for the first time in program history. USD's last tournament title came in 2014.

The Coyotes
South Dakota (26-5, 14-0 Summit) swept the Summit League regular season to earn the program's third title in four seasons. The Coyotes racked up nine postseason Summit awards, including sophomore guard Ciara Duffy and junior guard Allison Arens on the first team with senior guard Jasmine Trimboli earning the Defensive Player of the Year nod. South Dakota has a bench that runs nine deep with a different player leading the Coyotes in scoring every night. Junior guard Jaycee Bradley scored a career high 27 points in the Coyotes' quarterfinal win over Fort Wayne while senior center Kate Liveringhouse was one shy of her season high with 19 points in the semifinal win over Oral Roberts.

The Jackrabbits
South Dakota State (25-6, 12-2 Summit) has won seven of nine Summit League Tournaments in Sioux Falls with its last coming in 2016. All-Summit first team picks Macy Miller and Madison Guebert lead the team with 18.1 and 15.1 points per game, respectively. Miller adds 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

The Series
South Dakota swept South Dakota State in the regular season for just the second time in Division I. Since the series began in 1971, only once has a team won all three meetings during a season. SDSU accomplished that feat in 2013. The Coyotes only win in Sioux Falls against the Jackrabbits came in the semifinals of the 2014 tournament en route to USD's first NCAA Tournament appearance.

One Last Thing
Defense has been huge for the Coyotes in the first two tournament games. The Coyotes held Fort Wayne to a tournament record low 32 points in the quarterfinals, followed by only allowing Oral Roberts 53 points in the semifinals. The league's top defensive team will need some big stops Tuesday to come out on top.
