MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota junior
Nanette Nylund claimed a singles title for the second straight weekend during the women's tennis team's fall season.
Nylund, a week after posting a 4-0 mark at Drake, went 3-0 at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota to claim the Flight G singles title.
Nylund posted victories over North Dakota's Alex Revenig (6-4, 7-5), UNI's Olivia Fain (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) and Iowa State's Karen Alvarez (2-6, 6-2, 6-2).
"Nanette is 7-0 on the fall and had another great tournament win," Coach
Brett Barnett said. "She is playing with such confidence right now and winning her second tournament in a row is something that has never been done here I am guessing."
Laura Janícková and
Luana Stanciu each posted 2-1 marks in singles play while the doubles tandem of
Natka Kmošková and
Jana Lazarevic posted a pair of wins on Saturday to win their flight.
Janickova posted wins in Flight F over Nebraska's Elizabeth Gould (6-1, 6-0) and UNI's Daisy Phillips (6-0, 6-0) before falling in the title match to Nebraska's Marina Cozac (7-6, 6-3).
Stanciu, playing in Flight H, defeated North Dakota's Jaylee Yasunaga (6-3, 6-2) and UNI's Morganne Borsh (6-0, 6-2). She suffered a three-set loss to Iowa State's Savannah Williams (5-7, 6-2, 6-4).
Kmoskova/Lazarevic were strong in securing a pair of 6-2 wins over Drake's Neville/Walczak and Iowa State's Grib/Espindola.
"Laura had an outstanding tournament making the finals and having chances to beat a strong Nebraska player," said Barnett. "Jana and Natalie played great doubles on Saturday winning their flight beating Drake and Iowa State quick."
Habiba Aly, Kmoskova, Lazarevic and
Emma Tranberg each posted 1-2 singles marks during the four-day event.
"I feel really good about how the Gopher Invite went for us. We knew coming in it would be a little step up in level from who we saw at Drake and the team responded well," Coach
Brett Barnett said. "A great thing that I saw was how hard we competed and fought each match.
"There isn't a single match I can look back on in singles especially and say we didn't have chances to win. Everyone on the team left with wins and while we definitely can improve on some areas in our game, I love the way this team is progressing this early in the year."
The Coyotes play the third of four fall tournaments this weekend in Omaha at the Creighton Invite.
