Jump High and Throw Far! Anderson, Fenchel impress at Iowa

T&F: Hawkeye Invite

01.12.2019

IOWA CITY, Iowa—South Dakota senior Ethan Fenchel and junior Zack Anderson broke program records with marks that rank in the top-10 nationally for their respective events at the Hawkeye Invitational this weekend inside Hawkeye Indoor Track.

Anderson cleared 7 feet, 3 ¼ inches, in the high jump for the fourth-best height in the nation. The junior officially breaks a 29-year-old school record held by Kyle Collins at 7-1 ½, a height Anderson tied back in December. A native of Parker, South Dakota, Anderson became the sixth South Dakota high school athlete to break the 7-foot barrier in the high jump. He has since cleared the 7-foot mark 10 times in his collegiate career. Freshman Jack Durst finished runner-up to Anderson with a height of 6-8 ¾, while sophomore Travis Larson placed fourth.

Fenchel launched the weight 67-7 for the ninth-best mark nationally. The mark breaks his own school record, set last season, by more than a foot. Fenchel also broke the meet record in the event.

South Dakota captured five total events at the Hawkeye Invitational. Senior Eldon Warner took gold in the mile, while senior Kimmy Peterson and junior Chris Nilsen swept the pole vault.

Warner broke the Hawkeye Invitational meet record and was just shy of his own personal best with a one-mile run clocking of 4:09.22.

Nilsen captured the men's pole vault competition by more than a foot, vaulting 17-10 ½. Nilsen ranks second in the NCAA with the height this season. A pair of Coyote teammates also finished in the top-five. Freshman Sean McClellan placed third in 15-11 and senior Kaleb Ellis took fifth.

While Coyote alumna and volunteer assistant Emily Grove captured the pole vault on Saturday in 13-11 ¼, Peterson was the top collegian in the field and runner-up overall. Peterson vaulted 12-11 ½ in the fewest attempts to win. Junior Helen Falda cleared the same height to tie for third overall. Sophomore Landon Kemp took fifth.

Senior Joe Reagan finished runner-up in the 60 meters with a personal best of 6.83 seconds, improving by one-hundredth of a second. He also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 24-1 ¾.

The Coyotes swept second through fourth in the women's 60 meters. Junior Samara Spencer placed second in 7.60 seconds, while senior Karina Dufoe finished third in 7.72. Junior Tasheka Gordon rounded out the group in fourth.

Senior Lara Boman took second in the weight throw and was one of two athletes to pass the old meet record. Boman launched the weight 63-3 ¼.

Launching the shot put nearly a foot past his previous personal best, senior Ben Hammer took third place with a throw of 56-10.

Senior Mallory Fine clocked an indoor personal best of 2:13.96 for 800 meters. The time ranks 10th on USD's all-time indoor charts.

Junior Britny Kerr placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-5.

Sophomore Callie Henrich improved in the shot put by more than a foot, launching the shot 48-1 ¼ for fourth place in the competition. The mark ranks third on USD's indoor charts.
