The Coyotes
South Dakota (16-3, 4-1 Summit) compiled the program's best nonconference since the transition to NCAA Division I with a a pair of AP Top 25 victories. The Coyotes have received votes in the Associated Press poll for seven-straight weeks and the USA Today Coaches poll for six of the last seven weeks. The Coyotes are led by a pair of 1,000-point scorers in junior guard
Ciara Duffy (15.1 ppg) and senior guard
Allison Arens (11.3 ppg). The pair led the Yotes to a fourth-quarter comeback at Oral Roberts, turning a 10-point deficit into a five-point lead. Arens had a season-high 26 points while Duffy added 25 in the win. Sophomore center
Hannah Sjerven is the third player in double-figures with 10.3 points off the bench. South Dakota boasts a balanced attack with seven different leading scorers throughout the season.
The Mavericks
Omaha (6-11, 1-4 Summit) looks like an entirely new roster from a year ago with six letterwinners returning from last year's roster of 12. Blinn College transfer Rayanna Carter is the lone Maverick in double figures with 10.1 pionts per game, while the Mavericks' lone returning starter Claire Killian adds 9.9 more a contest. Omaha ranks second behind South Dakota in the Summit League for scoring defense, holding foes to 64.3 points per game. In Wednesday's loss to Western Illinois, the Leathernecks led by 25 entering the final frame. Omaha closed the gap to eight, thanks in part to senior guard Kalen Phillips' career high 25 points with 22 of those coming in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks would fall 78-70 to the Leathernecks on the road.
The Series
The series between the old NCC foes dates back to 1976-77 with South Dakota leading the all-time series 44-35. The Mavericks hold a 21-17 edge in Omaha. Since Omaha made the move to NCAA Division I and the Summit League, the Coyotes have won 12 of 14 contests.
One Last Thing
The Mavericks hold opponents to 39.9 percent shooting from the floor. Omaha also leads the Summit, and rank 21st nationally, for the fewest fouls per game with 14. Meanwhile, the Coyotes rank sixth nationally in free-throws made. Nearly 20 percent of USD's scoring comes from the line.
