South Dakota hosts Omaha at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion, South Dakota.
The Game
Home Sweet Home! Five of South Dakota's final seven regular season games will be played in the friendly confines of the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Action gets underway with the 81st meeting between two old North Central Conference foes.
The Coyotes
South Dakota (20-3, 8-1 Summit)Â boasts the Summit's top defense in an offensive-minded league. The Coyotes have made an emphasis as of late and held each of its last four opponents to 50 or fewer points, a feat not seen since 2003. That streak started with an 80-49 victory against the Mavericks in Omaha. Flip the script to the offensive end and the Coyotes feature a balanced display of seven different leading scorers this season. Four players are averaging double-digits in Summit League play with junior guard
Ciara Duffy's 17.7 points pacing the league. Senior guard
Allison Arens has averaged 15.1 points while shooting 56 percent, sophomore center
Hannah Sjerven's totaled 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, and sophomore guard
Chloe Lamb's averaged 11.1 points per game through the first nine league contests. The Coyotes are three points out of this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, a spot they have been chasing for 10-straight weeks as vote-getters.
The Mavericks
Omaha (7-15) has lost six Summit games in a row to fall to 1-8 in the league, a game behind Purdue Fort Wayne for the final spot in the Summit League Tournament. The Mavericks have averaged just 56 points during the stretch. UNO head coach Brittany Lange starts three freshmen while leading scorer Rayanna Carter is a junior transfer from Blinn College in Texas. Carter's pacing the Mavericks with 10.2 points and 1.8 assists per game, while freshman Josie Filer ranks third in the league for 7.6 rebounds per game.
The Series
South Dakota leads the all-time series with Omaha 45-35. The Coyotes have won the last three in the series, including an 80-49 decision over the Mavericks back on Jan. 20. Five Coyotes reached double-figures in that one with junior guard
Ciara Duffy pacing the group with 17 points.
One Last Thing
Do-it-all senior guard
Allison Arens is seven rebounds shy of becoming the fourth Coyote to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists for her career.
