VERMILLION – South Dakota women's tennis coach
Brett Barnett has announced the addition of three to his roster for the 2019-20 season.
Joining the Coyotes in the fall will be freshman Oleksandra Nahurska and Eesha Varma along with transfer Sille Tranberg, the twin sister of current Coyote
Emma Tranberg.
"This group combined with our returning players will easily give us the deepest team that I have ever had here and it will be fun to see everything that this group can accomplish," said Barnett.
Nahurska, from Lugansk, Ukraine, is the No. 9 ranked player in girls 18's in Ukraine and the No. 19 player in the women's rankings. She plans on studying sports management at USD.
"Nahurska is by far the highest rated player we have had here in the program," said Barnett. "She is currently a 10.4 UTR with multiple wins over 10 + players. She has had a lot of success back home in Ukraine being top 10 in 18's and top 20 in the women's rankings currently. I love how aggressive she likes to play from the back of the court and being able to move forward to finish points at the net is a great skill for a junior player to have.
"I really enjoyed getting to know her over the recruiting process and know how excited she is to arrive in Vermillion in the fall. She will be an impact player for us from the start."
Varma, from Eagan, Minnesota, was a four-year state tourney participant for the Wildcats, including finishing fifth as a senior. The future medical biology student at USD was also a three-time individual section champion while her team won four section titles.
"It is great that we can land a top 10 Northern Section player like Eesha," said Barnett. "She has had some good results over the last year and I feel she will continue to improve a lot here in our system. She is very solid from the back of the court and moves quite well. She is a great student that will fit in well here in our program. I am excited to start working with her this fall!"
Tranberg, a transfer from North Texas, saw action in seven spring matches in two seasons for the Mean Green. She is the No. 7 ranked Danish women's tennis player at the country's highest division. Selected to play for the Danish national team at the European Championships, Sille will be studying kinesiology at USD.
"I could not be more excited that Sille has decide to transfer to South Dakota to finish out her college career," said Barnett. "I recruited her two years ago and always have felt that she would fit in really well here.
"She is someone who can come in and make a difference immediately in both the singles and doubles lineup. She has a very well-rounded game and playing indoors on faster courts here will do nothing but help. She's had some great results back home in Denmark and some really nice wins at North Texas. I know how hard she will work to get the most out of her game and to help this team out. I cannot wait to start working with Sille and get her playing her style of tennis."
