CLEVELAND, Ohio – The South Dakota men's and women's swimming team scored points in four events during the opening day of the CSCAA National Invitational held Thursday at Busbey Natatorium on the Cleveland State campus.
The Coyote men's squad placed in both relays contested on Thursday, getting an 11
th place in the 200 free relay and a 12
th in the 400 medley relay.
Individually,
Brady Torborg and
Katie Coleman each swam in the finals of their respective events.
A quartet of freshmen in
Javi Quiñones, Torborg,
Jake Leichner and
Charlie Bean swam to a 1:22.36 clocking in the 200 free relay. Another freshmen foursome of Torborg,
Caden DeLay,
Jacob Won and Leichner, posted a 3:21.79 effort in the 400 medley relay.
Torborg qualified for the finals in the 50 back with his 23.65 morning prelim effort while he came back to finish 16
th in the finals with a 23.32 clocking.
Coleman, a senior, swam 23.47 in the morning prelims of the 50 free and also posted a 16
th place finish in the finals with a 23.29 effort.
The women's team saw its 200 free relay foursome of
Meghan Atwell,
Sabrina Sabadeanu,
Madilyn Sindelar and Coleman finish 21
st in 1:35.19.
Lucie Anderson,
Isabel Fairbanks,
Cassie Ketterling and Coleman posted a 3:52.82 clocking in the 400 medley relay, good for 31
st place.
Several Coyotes competed in the morning prelims, but failed to advance to the finals, which qualifies the fastest 20 in each individual event.
Coleman (25.18), Ketterling (25.77) and Sindelar (26.33) swam in the 50 butterfly prelims. DeLay (26.02) just missed the finals in the 50 breaststroke by :0.03 seconds while teammates Quinones (26.17) and Leichner (26.20) also swam in the 50 breaststroke prelims
Davenport (29.62), Atwell (29.62) and Fairbanks (29.89) swam in the 50 breaststroke prelims while Sabadeanu (27.04) and Anderson (27.59) took part in the 50 backstroke prelims. Atwell (24.51) also competed in the 50 free prelims.
Won (4:34.96) swam in the 500 free prelims while
Griffin Wolner (4:48.38) swam in the 500 free time trials.
Bean (21.17),
Elbert Chuang (21.35), Quinones (21.41) and Torborg (21.55) all competed in the 50 free prelims.
Day two begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. with prelims while the finals begin at 6 p.m.
