SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota swimming and diving teams opened the 2020-21 season on Thursday with the Coyote Extravaganza inside the Midco Aquatic Center.
The opening day of the three-day meet saw limited events, nine in total, contested on a 50-meter length pool, while Friday and Saturday's action will be contested on a 25-yard pool.
In what will amount to the Coyotes only competition in the 2020 portion of the schedule, South Dakota is also the only team competing at this meet. This also marked the first competition of any team from South Dakota this school year.
Jackson Gurley, a freshman, got the meet started with a 58.38 effort in the 100 fly.
Teagan Haberkorn, a sophomore, and
Kaitlyn Housenga, a senior, competed in the 400 free and posted times of 4:48.35 and 4:54.13, respectively.
Cory Jacocks, a sophomore and
Seth Jones, a senior, also swam in the 400 free and clocked 4:25.33 and 4:32.90, respectively. Housenga, meanwhile, also swam a 1:04.55 in the 100 free.
The biggest race of the night was the 50 free where on the women's side junior
Meghan Atwell (28.00) edged out classmate
Madilyn Sindelar (28.11). On the men's side, sophomore
Zachary Kopp (24.27) top the eight-person field. Trailing the school's 50-free school record holder on the yard side were freshman

Wyatt Thompson (25.22), sophomore

Brady Torborg, a junior, posted a 1:01.58 in the 100 back while senior
Wyatt Thompson (2:00.76) nosed junior
Griffin Wolner (2:00.96) in the 200 free.
In the 50 butterfly, Sathre (26.54) edged out Sinclair (27.22) while in the 50 breast
Parker Sonnabend made his Coyote debut with a 30.99 to touch the wall just ahead of DeLay, who swam 31.15.
The five-man field in the 100 free saw
Charlie Bean, a junior and the school record holder on the yard side, swim 53.11 to touch first in the race. Feit posted 53.95, Thompson 57.46, junior
Henry Simpson 57.87. Leichner, swimming in a separate heat of the 100 free, touched in 54.27.
In the final race of the evening, Payton Ryz posted a time of 10:37.10 in the 800 free.
Friday's schedule begins at 10 a.m. with swimming prelims, following by diving at 1 p.m. and the swimming finals at 5 p.m.
