Leichner sets school record in 400 IM

S&D: Extravaganza Day 3

SIOUX FALLS – Jake Leichner became the first Coyote to break the four-minute mark in the 400 IM on the final day of the three-day Coyote Extravaganza on Saturday inside the Midco Aquatic Center.

Leichner, a junior, blazed to a 3:59.54 clocking in the finals of the 400 IM to set the new school record in the event and break the four-minute barrier. He had earlier set the school record in the morning prelims with a 4:00.74 effort and lowered that time in the evening finals.

Leichner now holds the school's individual race records in all three individual medley events, the 100, 200 and 400 IM's.

The South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving programs opened the season with this three-day meet and Saturday's final day saw five new marks into the Coyote Top 10 charts and one improvement.

Mack Sathre, a sophomore, moved up to third on the 100 IM charts by winning the event in 51.47. Parker Sonnabend, a freshman, moved into the Coyote Top 10 in the 100 IM at No. 6 with a runner-up 51.97. Brady Torborg, a junior, also moved into the Coyote Top 10 in the 100 IM with his morning prelims time of 52.68 to place him eighth all-time.

A couple of Coyote freshmen moved into the Top 10 lists in the 200 back as Colton Burks and Maddie Grant joined the charts. Burks won the race in 1:52.39 and now sits sixth all-time while Grant was the runner-up to Lucie Anderson (2:05.60) in 2:07.10 and is now 10th all-time.

Two more freshmen joined the Coyote Top 10 list in Keegan Henning in the 1650 free and Jackson Gurley in the 200 butterfly. Henning swam 16:13.96 to win the event and move into eighth all-time while Gurley finished second to Jacob Won (1:51.52) with a time of 1:54.16 to move into a tie for seventh all-time.

Isabel Fairbanks, the school record holder in the 100 IM, won the event on the women's side with a time of 59.42 while junior Maddie Lavin, the school record holder in the 200 fly, won the race in 2:05.38.

Leah Drengenberg, a junior, won the 1650 free in 17:54.27 while sophomore Emily Johnson won the 100 free in 53.42. Isabelle Davenport, a junior, captured the 200 breaststroke race in 2:27.56 and Kristen Quigley, a junior, won the 400 IM in 4:36.72.

Junior Charlie Bean, the school record holder in the 100 free, won the race in 45.81 while junior Caden DeLay triumphed in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.12.

Freshman Stella Fairbanks, the one-meter diving winner on Friday, won the event again on Saturday with a final point total of 242.25. Haley Pederson, a senior, won the three-meter competition with a point total of 241.90.

Leichner swam on both winning relay units on Saturday, joining Torborg, Ben Kopp and Elbert Chuang on the 200 medley and Bean, Chuang and Zachary Kopp on the 400 free.

Madilyn Sindelar, Maddie Gallagher and Fairbanks swam on both winning relays on the women's side as Davenport joined them in the 200 medley and Emily Johnson was in on the 400 free relay victory.

The Coyote Extravaganza marked the only competition on the 2020 portion of this season's swimming and diving schedule.
