VERMILLION – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving team had 10 members named to the Academic All-Summit League team announced Thursday by the league office.
The men's and women's team had equal representation as five from each squad were named, including a trio of repeat selections. Senior
Josh Sorbe is honored for the third time in his career while juniors
Haley Pederson and
Elbert Chuang are repeat honorees.
The men's team was represented by Sorbe and Chuang along with sophomores
Jake Leichner and
Jacob Won and junior
Mark Vanderzee. Pederson is joined by Coyote women's team members
Sabrina Sabadeanu, a senior, along with sophomores
Lucie Anderson,
Isabel Fairbanks and
Jordyn Schnell.
Chuang, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, earned All-Summit League honors in four events, two individual and two relays, and finished in the top eight in all five events he participated in at the league championships. He finished second in the 100 IM (51.72), third in the 100 fly (49.87) and eighth in the 100 breast (56.98). He was a member of the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay that earned runner-up finishes. The kinesiology and sport management major carries a 3.94 GPA.
Sorbe, one of five repeat selections of the 16 men selected, and the lone three-time honoree posted three top 16 finishes at the Summit League Championships. Sorbe placed 10
th in the 1650 free (16:35.25), 14
th in the 400 IM (4:10.56) and 16
th in the 500 free (4:47.99). The Brookings, South Dakota, native, carries a 4.0 GPA in political science and economics.
Vanderzee, a Brookings, South Dakota, native, posted a trio of top 20 finishes at the Summit League Championships. He finished sixth in the 1650 free (16:21.60), 18
th in the 500 free (4:46.11) and 19
th in the 400 IM (4:22.06). The nursing major carries a 3.92 GPA.
Won, from Katy, Texas, was a member of the Coyotes 800 free relay team that finished second, earning All-League honors. He posted a trio of top eight individual finishes with fifth-place efforts in the 100 fly (50.67) and 200 fly (1:52.14) and a sixth-place in the 400 IM (4:06.83). The economics major has a 3.81 GPA.
Leichner became the first Coyote ever to win an individual race at the league championships with his victory in the 100 IM (50.77). The native of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, posted fifth-place finishes in the 200 IM (1:50.49) and 100 breast (56.38). He also was a part of four relay teams that earned All-League honors with runner-up finishes.
Pederson, a native of West Fargo, N.D., earned All-Summit League honors in both diving events, the one-meter and three-meter. She finished as the league runner-up in the three-meter event with a score of 291.35 while finishing third in the one-meter event. The NCAA Zone Diving Qualifier for the second straight season carries a 4.0 GPA as a management major.
Sabadeanu, who hails from Commerce City, Colorado, earned All-Summit League honors in four events, one individual and three relays. She was the runner-up in the 100 back (57.00) while also finishing fourth in the 200 back (2:02.89) and eighth in the 200 IM (2:07.04). She swam on Coyote relay teams that finished second (200 medley, 400 medley) and third (200 free). The health science major carries a 3.44 GPA.
Fairbanks, a native of Highland, Michigan, had a trio of top 10 individual finishes at the Summit League Championships and also swam on a fourth-place 800 free relay. She placed third in the 100 IM (58.19), earning all-league honors for the first time in an individual event, while also finishing fifth in the 100 back (57.87) an 10
th in the 200 IM (2:08.38). The health science major carries a 3.93 GPA.
Schnell earned all-league honors as part of four different Coyote relay teams at the Summit League Championships. The Saint Michael, Minnesota, native, also posted individual finishes of sixth in the 100 free (51.85), eighth in the 50 free (23.93) and 14
th in the 100 back (1:00.23). The management major is a 4.0 student.
Anderson earned her first individual All-league honor following a third-place finish in the 100 back (57.02). The native of Mitchell, South Dakota, also finished fifth in the 200 back (2:03.67) and 23
rd in the 50 free (25.47). The nursing major carries a 3.82 GPA.
To be eligible for the Summit League Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30, completed one academic year at their current institution and participated in 50 percent of competitions.
