NEWTON, Kan. – The South Dakota men's golf team completed the first day of the 2021 Summit League Championships in fourth place with a score of 297. The men had three golfers end their first rounds in the top 10 on the leaderboard.
Senior
Matt Tolan leads the Yotes as he sits tied for fifth place with an opening round of 72. Junior
Ben Hicks carded a 73 to sit tied for eighth place. Hicks recorded five birdies in the opening 18 holes and was tied for the lead after a strong front nine score of 2-under. Sophomore
Ian Johnston also capped off a solid opening round of 73 as well to sit tied for eighth place with Hicks.
Rounding out the field for USD are senior
Tate Arends and junior
Justin Kolb. Arends and Kolb both shot opening rounds of 79 to head into the second round tied for 31
st.
As a team, the Yotes shot a round one score of 297 to sit three strokes back from North Dakota State and Denver who are tied for second and four strokes back from the day one leader Oral Roberts.
INSIDE THE SCORECARD
- The Yotes ranked second on Par 3s with a 3.15 average and on Par 5s with a 5.05 average.
- USD had the third most pars on the first day with 53 and the third most birdies with 14.
- Johnston did exceptionally well on Par 3s ranking second with a 2.75 average.
- Hicks led the leaderboard on Par 5s with an average of 4.25.
ROUND TWO
The third round is set to begin Sunday at 8 a.m. Kolb is set to tee off at 8:50, Arends at 9, Johnston at 9:10, Hicks at 9:20 and Tolan at 9:30.
