Coyotes top Mavericks in season debut

MANKATO, Minn.—South Dakota won 13 of 14 swim events in topping Minnesota State 184-115 in a women's dual Friday evening at Highland Pool. It was the first dual meet of the season for both programs.

It was a solid debut for a trio of Coyote freshmen who combined to win five of the 12 individual swim events. Camilla Brogger-Andersen (Aalborg, Denmark) won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events with times of 5:13.03 and 10:37.10, respectively. Taylor Buhr (Bettendorf, Iowa) swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, touching in 1:06.07 and 2:23.37. The 200 time is ninth on the program's all-time performance list. Tatum O'Shea (Ajax, Ontario) won the 200 backstroke (2:07.10) and swam the opening leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

Standout sprinter Emily Kahn kicked off her sophomore campaign with a meet-high four golds. She won both sprints, touching in 24.10s in the 50 free and 53.31s in the 100. She also led off the winning 200 free relay team and anchored the 200 medley relay.

Fifth-year senior Cassie Ketterling was also part of the medley relay as was senior Skylar Welle. Ketterling won the 100-yard butterfly (57.54s) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.51) in her season debut.

Sophomore Skyler Leverenz and sophomores Sara Mayer and Christina Spomer helped the 200 free relay team clock in at 1:37.36. Leverenz and O'Shea went 1-2 in the 200 free with Leverenz's winning time of 1:57.33. Mayer won the 200 butterfly at 2:14.67.

Minnesota State's Ayla Taylor won the 1-meter diving with a score of 242.90. Coyote sophomore Samantha Mersnick was close behind in second place with a score of 238.35.

It was also a tight race on the 3-meter where MSU's Carla Gutierrez Anaya topped USD junior Kayla Middaugh by a quarter of a point. Anaya's winning tally was 243.00 points. Coyote junior Stella Fairbanks took bronze with 240.25 points.

South Dakota improved to 7-1 against the Mavericks since 2014. The Coyote men join the fun Oct. 15 when both USD squads compete in the Nebraska Tri Duals in Lincoln, Nebraska.
