SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota swimming and diving produced four school records and 10 new marks inside the school's all-time top 10 lists during Friday's day two of the Augustana Invitational held at Midco Aquatic Center.
The Coyotes won six of the eight individual swimming events on day two as the women's team leads the team standings and the men are in second heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
Tatum O'Shea, a freshman, and
Jack Berdahl, a sophomore, swam their way to the top of the South Dakota school charts while sophomore
Adam Fisher twice lowered his already owned school record time in the 100 back.
The Coyotes closed competition on Friday by sweeping the 400 medley relay events, as both the men and women set school records in the process.
O'Shea led off the women's foursome as was joined by
Taylor Buhr,
Cassie Ketterling and
Emily Kahn in clocking 3:44.34 to win the race.
Adam Fisher, Berdahl,
Mack Sathre and
Zachary Kopp timed 3:14.44 to win the men's race and etch their names into the school's record book.
O'Shea became the first Coyote ever to break the 55-second barrier in the 100 back when she touched in a school record time of 54.99 while winning the finals.
Berdahl, meanwhile, set his school record in the 100 breast prelims, clocking 54.14, before finishing third in the finals in 54.80. Teammate
Grant Wolner was second in the finals in 54.59, a time good for second all-time.
Fisher, who set the school record in the 100 fly on Thursday, broke the 49-second barrier twice in the 100 back on Friday, posting a 48.81 in the prelims and then leading a 1-2 Coyote finish in the finals with a 48.12 clocking. Kopp, a senior, who sits second on the school's all-time charts in the event, clocked a personal best 49.03 in the prelims and 49.59 while finishing second in the finals.
A quartet of newcomers posted individual victories for South Dakota on Friday as fifth-year senior
Alec Thomas, a transfer from Saint Bonaventure, joined a trio of freshmen –
Camilla Brogger-Andersen,
Jacob Ketterling and Buhr – in the winner's circle.
Thomas clocked 1:39.04 while winning the 200 free, a time that ranks third all-time.
Brogger-Andersen, the 500 free winner on Thursday, won the 200 free on Friday in 1:50.05, moving into the Coyote Top 10 at third all-time.
Ketterling won the 400 IM in 4:04.03 and sits seventh on the top 10 charts while Buhr claimed the 100 breast in 1:02.51, just off her prelim time of 1:02.27 that ranks second all-time.
Saturday's final day begins with prelims at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
