The Coyotes
The Summit League regular season champions, South Dakota (25-5, 17-1) advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 75-49 win over Western Illinois on Saturday. The Coyotes are led by Summit League Player of the Year
Chloe Lamb, Summit Defensive Player of the Year
Hannah Sjerven and all-Summit pick
Liv Korngable. The trio account for nearly two-thirds of USD's scoring this season. Second-year freshmen
Maddie Krull and
Kyah Watson join them in the starting line-up. Freshman
Grace Larkins was named the Summit League Sixth Woman of the Year, and she showed out in her tournament opener with a career high 23 points to pace the Yotes in game one. Sjerven and Korngable both joined her in double-figures, while Lamb got the six points she needed to tie Ciara Duffy for third on USD's all-time scoring charts.
The Roos
Kansas City (23-7, 12-6) flipped the script in the second half, overcoming a 14-point deficit to defeat North Dakota State 81-74. The Roos are led by a pair of all-Summit first team picks in Naomie Alnatas and Brooklyn McDavid. Alnatas sank a 3-pointer, followed-up with the and-one free throw, with 21 seconds remaining to give UMKC a 76-72 advantage. She finished with 32 points in the game, while McDavid had 13. Kiara Bradley and Paige Bradford both tallied double-doubles and their fifth starter Mandy Williems had 11 points. The Roos' starting five accounted for 80 of their 81 points in the game.
The Series
South Dakota leads the series 6-4 with the Coyotes winning all four meetings since the Roos rejoined the Summit League in 2020. USD defeated Kansas City 71-49 in the last meeting Feb. 24 in Vermillion. The last time these two programs met on a neutral floor was in the 1983-84 season at the Grand View Classic during nonconference play in Des Moines, Iowa.
One Last Thing
The Coyotes forced 24 Leatherneck turnovers in Saturday's quarterfinals, swiping away a season-high 18 steals in the contest with four apiece from Watson and Larkins. It was also the most steals that USD's had in a Summit League Tournament game in program history.
