The Coyotes
South Dakota (26-5, 17-1) is making its ninth appearance in the Summit League Tournament's championship game in 10 tries. USD advanced to Tuesday with an 81-67 semifinal win over Kansas City, following Saturday's 75-49 win over Western Illinois. The Coyotes are led by Summit League Player of the Year
Chloe Lamb, Summit Defensive Player of the Year
Hannah Sjerven and all-Summit pick
Liv Korngable. The trio account for nearly two-thirds of USD's scoring this season. Second-year freshmen
Maddie Krull and
Kyah Watson join them in the starting line-up. Freshman
Grace Larkins was named the Summit League Sixth Woman of the Year. Lamb dropped a career high 33 points on Monday, which moved her to ninth in career scoring in Summit history. Sjerven added 24 points and nine boards in 26 minutes of action, while Korngable added 10 points and five assists.
The Jackrabbits
After an early tournament exit a year ago, South Dakota State (23-8, 17-1) is back in the Summit League Tournament Championship game. Co-champions with the Coyotes in the regular season, SDSU earned the No. 1 seed with a higher NET ranking. The Jackrabbits' road to the championship game includes wins over Denver (86-59) and Oral Roberts (72-53). SDSU's last tournament title came in 2019, which coincidentally is the last Summit League Tournament game that first-team pick Myah Selland played in. She's averaged 21 points through the first two games. All-Summit second-team guard Paige Meyer is out with a knee injury, but that hasn't slowed the Jacks in their opening games.
The Series
South Dakota State leads the series 61-34 with the Coyotes and Jacks splitting the regular season meetings. USD won 65-42 in Vermillion in January, while SDSU took round two 75-65 in Brookings in February. This is the seventh championship game between the Yotes and the Jacks in the last decade.
One Last Thing
The last time USD and SDSU met inside the Denny? March 10, 2020. It was a packed house and the No. 17/11 Yotes won 63-58 as a sea of red stormed the court. Two days later, the NCAA Tournament would be canceled and the world as we knew it changed. Two years later and we've come full circle with the Yotes and the Jacks back in the Denny in front of a crowd.
