South Dakota women's golf released its 2022-23 schedule on Friday. The Coyotes will play in five tournaments in the fall and six in the spring capped off by the Summit League Championships in late April. USD will travel across the country in the 2022-23 season highlighted by tournaments that include power-five programs and top-level talent in Division I.
"There are six new tournaments on the schedule that will provide new life and athletic experiences for our student-athletes as it takes us all over the United States," said USD head coach
Brett Bennett. "The competition with these events will give us a great chance to see where we stack up against a couple of power-five schools and some of the best mid-major programs."
The season gets underway in September with the first two tournaments held in Missouri. The Coyotes begin with the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial tournament hosted by Missouri State on September 12 and 13. The next event in the Show Me State is the Johnie Imes Invitational. That tournament is a three-day event beginning on September 26 and is hosted by Missouri.
After opening the year in Missouri, South Dakota heads to the west coast for a two-day tournament in Tacoma, Washington. The Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational takes place on October 3 and 4 and is hosted by Seattle University. The Coyotes then go from west coast to east coast to close out the fall schedule. Florida International hosts the Pat Bradley Invitational from October 15 to October 17 in Sarasota, Florida, before Wofford hosts the Terrier Intercollegiate on October 24 and 25 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to bring an end to the fall season.
The spring schedule starts off with a highly-anticipated tournament in New Orleans, Louisiana. Tulane will host the Tulane Classic from February 13 through February 15. South Dakota then heads to Arizona for the Rio Verde Invite where they broke two records last season. The team shot a 6-over par in the second round of the tournament which is a record for the lowest round relative to par in team history. On the final day of action at last year's Rio Verde Invite, the Coyotes shot a 302 in the third round to bring their three-round total to 904 which was a new program record for the team's lowest 54-hole score.
USD will get a few weeks off after the Rio Verde Invite before traveling to Boulder City, Nevada, for the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 13 and 14. The Jackrabbit Invitational is the only tournament for the Coyotes in the month of March. Then, the month of April leads off with a new tournament for South Dakota. The Pinetree Women's Collegiate, hosted by Kennesaw State, falls on April 3 and 4 in Kennesaw, Georgia. The regular season concludes with a familiar tournament for the Coyotes in the Stampede at the Creek. Like the Rio Verde Invite, South Dakota also set two new records while competing at the Stampede at the Creek. USD shot a 290 as a team in the second round of last season's Stampede at the Creek. The 290 set a new program record for lowest team round in program history. Not only did the Coyotes finish the tournament with their third consecutive runner-up placement, but they also broke the 54-hole score record again with an 894 overall score.
The season comes down to the Summit League Championships at a new host city in Lincoln, Nebraska. The tournament is a three-day event running from April 23 through April 25. USD finished in fourth place at last year's Summit League Championships with two individuals placing in the top-20.
South Dakota returns three golfers from last year's squad.
Molly Fossen will play in her fifth season for the Coyotes and is coming off her best year thus far. She had two top-10 finishes including the highest finish of her career after earning fifth place at the Diane Daugherty Invite. Fossen also shot new personal-lows in single round and 54-hole score last year.
Danica Badura and
Akari Hayashi return for their junior season to add more experience to the lineup. Badura was second on the team last year with a 76.73 stroke average and recorded three top-10 finishes in her sophomore year. Hayashi was third on the team last season with a 77.66 stroke average and closed out the spring schedule with three-straight top-10 finishes. The Coyotes round out the roster with three freshmen in
Emma Henningsson,
Catie Nekola, and
Alexa Wingnean. Â
"The season is right around the corner," said Bennett. "I am ready for our squad to get to Vermillion and get to work in preparation for these events."
