Coyotes meet Jacks in Brookings

01.13.2023

South Dakota gets its first look at South Dakota State Saturday in a 1 p.m. tip inside Frost Arena in Brookings. It is the 97th meeting between the two teams. The Coyotes have won five of the last eight meetings over the last three seasons.

How to Watch
The game is being televised by Midco Sports. You can find that broadcast on Midco Sports Plus and ESPN+, both of which require subscriptions. The ESPN+ link is here.

How to Listen
Carter Woodiel from the Coyote Sports Network is providing a radio broadcast that will air on KVHT 106.3 FM in Yankton/Vermillion. A link to that broadcast is here.

The Coyotes
South Dakota played four of six at home to start Summit play. The Coyotes will play five of their next seven on the road starting Saturday.

Senior Jeniah Ugofsky is the only active Coyote who has started games in this series and only five USD players have competed against the Jacks. Grace Larkins is one of them. The sophomore has averaged 21.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists in Summit play. She had 30 points, eight boards and nine assists last time out against North Dakota State. It is the third time she has flirted with a triple-double this season.

The Coyotes were aided last week by a bench that includes Carley Duffney and Nicole Avila-Ambrosi. They combined to score 40 points in the two home games. True freshman Walker Demers and redshirt freshman Cassidy Carson also aide the Coyotes' starting five. All four will be counted on as USD embarks on this road swing.

The Jackrabbits
South Dakota State is the defending WNIT champion and a heavy favorite to win the Summit's regular season crown this season. A road loss at Montana State was the team's lone blemish during a challenging non-conference schedule that saw losses to Creighton, UCLA, Washington State and South Carolina. The Jacks scored wins against Mississippi State, Louisville and Kansas State and are 6-0 to start Summit play.

Seniors Myah Selland and Paiton Burckhard represent the best frontcourt in the league. Paige Meyer returned from last year's injury in time for conference play, Haleigh Timmer is back for year two and the Jacks added Utah grad transfer Dru Gylten to handle distribution.

The Jacks are the top defensive team in the league and they pound the paint offensively to reach the free-throw line. They shoot 45 percent from the field as a team, 38th-best nationally.

One Last Thing
The winner of Saturday's game scores a point for their respective department in the annual South Dakota Showdown Series. South Dakota State holds a 4.5-2.5 lead through fall sports. Saturday's men's result against SDSU in Vermillion will also contribute to the tally.
