FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The South Dakota women's tennis team traveled to altitude and while competing for the third straight weekend came away with another strong showing during the Jon Messick Invitational hosted by Colorado State University.
Â
Grace Chadick and
Anna Medvyedyeva remained unbeaten in doubles this fall, posting a 3-0 mark, and winning a 'Flight' title for the third straight weekend. The duo is now 12-0 on the season.
Â
"I'm very impressed with how we competed at CSU this week," coach Brett Barnet said. "Playing three weeks in a row is not easy and coming to high altitude can be a challenge.
Â
"This team embraced the challenge, fought so hard and had another great tournament. This was a big step up in different teams and a very high level overall."
Â
Six of the eight individuals to participate posted winning marks in singles play with
Hitakamya Narwal reaching a 'Flight' final while the Coyotes doubles teams went 8-5 over the course of the three-day event.
Â
Chadick and Medvyedyeva posted a tense 7-5 win in the opening round over a Utah State duo before cruising to the title with wins of 6-2 over Wyoming and 6-1 over Weber State.
Â
Amanda de Oliveira and
Paige Alter posted a 2-2 mark in doubles while Narwal and
Selena Bird went 2-1.
Â
"Grace and Anna are just on a roll and playing so well together," said Barnett. "They're finding ways to win against different types of opponents each week."
Â
Narwal, a freshman, posted a 2-1 mark while reaching the 'Orange Flight' title match. She defeated a pair of athletes from Weber State before falling to Utah State's Cielo Tapia-Cruz in a tough three-set battle. Narwal is now 6-1 in the fall.
Â
Chadick, a junior, rebounded from an opening loss in singles to win a trio of matches and claim the consolation title in the 'Green Flight' Chadick, now 8-1 on the fall season, posted straight sets wins over Metro State and Weber State before pulling out a third-set tiebreak win (10-7) over Utah State.
Â
Bea Havlickova went 3-1, Bird 2-1 and de Oliveira 2-2 with both of her singles victories coming against individuals from Power 5 schools.
Â
Sorcha Caves had a three-set win over Wyoming before suffering a pair of three-set losses while de Oliveira defeated an Iowa State's Isabella Dunlap and Colorado's Ellan Puzak in straight sets.
Paige Alter earned a singles win over Utah State's Ana Sanchez.
Â
"Hiti had a good tournament making the final and had her chances to win her draw," said Barnett. "Bea had a very nice win over Utah States #1 and even though Sorcha came up short in a couple matches she fought so hard.
Â
"Amanda picked up two more power 5 wins and Grace and Selena competed well and both had nice wins after being down. Paige played some great doubles and took over the court in a couple of matches."
Â
The Coyotes are now 47-22 in singles play through three fall tournaments and 33-16 in doubles.
Â
South Dakota takes a week off before it closes the fall schedule by participating in the ITA regionals in Lawrence, Kansas beginning Oct. 12.
Â
"Overall everyone played well and had great results," added Barnett. "This is by far the best we've ever played at CSU.
Â
"This team loves competing and they are not backing down from anyone. The logo on the shirt doesn't matter as we're just going out and competing, fighting and playing for each other. Well-earned weekend off and we will be ready to have a great regional tournament."
