Coyotes set five school, three pool marks in home dual

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota women's swimming and diving set five school records and three DakotaDome Pool records during Friday's narrow 151.5-148.5 dual loss to Iowa State.
 
The Coyotes won nine of the 16 events contested during the meet as Taylor Buhr won three races and Emily Kahn a pair. Also touching the wall first in individual events were Gabbie Ahrendt and Sara Mayer while South Dakota won both relays that were swam, setting school and pool records in both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.
 
Buhr, a sophomore, set school records in two of her three individuals wins, as she touched first in the 200 breast in 2:37.93 and 200 IM in 2:23.52. She missed setting a school record in her other victory – the 100 breast – by :0.01 seconds, clocking 1:12.97.
 
Kahn, a junior, won both the 50 free and 100 free sprint races, breaking her own school and pool record in the 50 free when she touched first in 26.12. She posted a time of 58.49 to win the 100 free.
 
Kahn also anchored both Coyote relay quartet's to wins as she joined Grace Schultz, Buhr and Mayer in the 200 medley relay that clocked 1:56.64. She teamed with Ahrendt, Mayer and Schultz in the 200 free relay that closed the meet with a 1:46.13 effort.
 
Ahrendt, a freshman, won the 200 free in 2:06.55, edging out teammate Tatum O'Shea, who was second in 2:06.86.
 
Mayer, a junior, led a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly with a 1:03.96 while freshman Bri Ruark was second in 1:04.73.
 
Ahrendt was second behind Kahn in the 100 free (58.76), Mayer second in the 200 fly (2:22.72) and Schultz, a sophomore, second in the 100 back in 1:05.27.
 
Stella Fairbanks, a senior, posted a season best score of 270.20 on the three-meter diving board and placed second. Kayla Middaugh, a senior, had a career best score of 264 on the one-meter diving board and finished second while moving up to eighth on the school's all-time charts.
 
Samantha Mersnick, a junior, posted career best scores on both diving board, posting point totals of 245.78 on the three-meter and 254.93 on the one-meter.
 
South Dakota will host the two-day Coyote Extravaganza inside the Midco Aquatic Center in Sioux Falls next Friday and Saturday.
