South Dakota goes for sweep of North Dakota

02.03.2023

This year's Fighting Hawks team was 10-0 at home and 1-8 on the road heading into this week. That unbeaten home streak ended Thursday at the hands of South Dakota State.

Five Coyotes reached double-figures in the first meeting against the Hawks. Larkins had 21 points and Nicole Avila-Ambrosi had seven steals and buried four 3-pointers in one of her best games. The Coyotes made 11 three's and got 14 points all in the second quarter from Alexi Hempe to net the win.

The Hawks
North Dakota's makeup is the exact opposite of South Dakota's. Six of the Hawks' top seven players are seniors or graduate students. The Coyotes, meanwhile, are one of two teams in the country where the five leading scorers are underclassmen.

Senior guard Kacie Borowicz is the Summit's leading scorer at 20 points per game. She had 18 points on 18 shots in the first go-around with USD. Fifth-year veteran Claire Orth is averaging double-digit points for the second year in a row. Freshman Nakiyah Hurst as made an immediate impact among the senior-laden squad. She comes off the bench and is the Hawks' third-leading scorer.

Duffney Delivering
South Dakota redshirt freshman Carley Duffney is averaging 18.6 points and shooting 53 percent from the field since entering the starting lineup five games ago. She has scored in double figures eight games in a row with three 20-point efforts in her last five games. She compliments Larkins who now ranks in the top three of the League in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
