Coyotes face Sioux Falls, travel to Kansas State

South Dakota women's tennis team heads into week two of the spring season with a pair of matches beginning with Friday's match in Sioux Falls at Huether Family Match Pointe against Sioux Falls. The Coyotes then travel to Manhattan, Kansas for a Sunday match against Kansas State of the Big XII.

SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA

The Coyotes split a pair of matches on the opening weekend, suffering a close 4-2 loss to Iowa State before defeating Missouri State 4-3 in matches that were played at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa.

Sophomores Selena Bird and Anna Medvyedyeva went 2-0 on opening weekend for South Dakota.

Grace Chadick, a junior, earned the match clinching victory against Missouri State and joined Bird as the first Coyotes to reach 10 individual victories on the season.

SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS

The Cougars are playing an exhibition match as they wont officially begin their season until February 16.

Sioux Falls returns all nine players who participated in its Northern Sun Conference matches in 2023.

Sydney Osburn, a sophomore, and Danielle Thorfinnson, a senior, both earned second-team All-NSIC honors in 2023 in singles. Osburn and Ella Hancock, a sophomore, were second team selections in doubles.

SCOUTING KANSAS STATE

Kansas State opened its season with a 6-1 win over Drake, winning all six singles matches after dropping the doubles point.

The Wildcats were 2-20 in 2023 and return three players from their spring dual season, Vanesa Suazrez, Manami Ukita and Maria Santos. All three players won their respective singles matches against Drake in straight sets.

Suarez, a sophomore who played No. 1 singles against Drake, split the majority of her time in the lineup a year ago at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, posting a 5-10 overall record in the dual season.

Ukita, a senior who played No. 2 singles against Drake, played anywhere from No. 3 to No. 6 in 2023, also going 5-10 in the dual season.

Santos, a sophomore who played No. 6 singles against Drake, played in seven matches during the dual season in 2023, combined between No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
