Four individual wins highlight day one

ROCHESTER, Minnesota – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 16 top three finishes during Friday's opening day of the two-day Huskie (Coyote) Invitational from the Rochester-Olmstead County Recreation Center Natatorium.

A trio of freshmen and a senior accounted for four individual race victories on Friday in a meet that has five women's teams and three men's teams competing.

Nick Rounds made it a perfect three-for-three in 50 freestyle races this season and the freshman moved to the top of the Summit League charts with a 20.74 clocking.

Alex Parkinson won for the second time this season in the 500 free as the freshman touched the wall in 4:40.78. 

David Mayer earned his first collegiate individual race victory as the freshman claimed the 100 free in a season best of 46.79.

Senior veteran Jack Berdahl won the 100 breast in a season best of 56.33 to also move to the top of the Summit League charts in that event. 

Madilyn Gehrke and Taylor Buhr provided runner-up finishes while third-place efforts came from Gabbie Ahrendt, Dylan Hogenson, Sara Mayer, Ethan LaBounty, Charlie Matthews and Gehrke.

Gehrke, a freshman, had season best times in both events while finishing second in the 100 free in 52.69 and third in the 100 breast in 1:06.79 while Buhr, a junior, was second in the 100 breast in a season-best of 1:06.09.

Ahrendt, a sophomore, was timed in a season best of 1:54.53 in the 200 free while Hogenson, a freshman, swam a season best of 4:36.94 in the 400 IM while one more season best came from senior Sara Mayer in the 100 butterfly of 57.44.

LaBounty, a freshman, was timed in 57.87 in the 100 breaststroke and Matthews, a sophomore, had a final point total of 234.40 on the one-meter diving board. 

Saturday's second and final day of competition gets underway with diving at 10:10 a.m. and swimming at 1 p.m.
