SAINT PAUL, Minn. – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams came away with seven victories on Friday's second day of the three-day Tommie Invitational held inside Anderson Pool on the St. Thomas campus.
The Coyote women won both relays contested while receiving individual wins from
Phoebe Paarlberg and
Grace Schultz. Meanwhile, the men's squad also had two individuals post triumphs as
Jack Berdahl and
Joaquin Contreras-Fallico touched the wall first in their respective events while the 200 medley relay quartet was also victorious and moved to the top of the Summit League charts in the process.
South Dakota increased its lead in the team standings thanks to 22 top three finishes during the day that saw 15 finals (eight women, seven men) contested. Nine new entries into the Coyote Top Ten charts and five Summit League leading marks. Heading into Saturday's final day of competition the women's team has 1,292 points and the men's squad 1,172.Â
Paarlberg, a sophomore, led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke for the Coyotes with her season best of 1:03.16, good to move into second on the Summit League charts.
Taylor Buhr was second in the race with a 1:03.76 while freshman
Madilyn Gehrke was third in 1:04.02, a time that moves her into fourth all-time on the Coyote Top Ten charts.
Schultz, a junior, also led a trio of South Dakota women in the 'A' final of the 100 backstroke with her winning time of 55.28, a personal best.
Anna Balfanz was third in 56.59 and
Gabbie Ahrendt fourth in 56.79.Â
Paarlberg and Schultz each earned their second victories of the season in their respective events.Â
Berdahl, a senior, made it three wins in four appearances in the 100 breaststroke this season with his finals time of 54.36, taking the Summit League lead. Teammates
Grant Wolner, second in 55.17 and
Parker Sonnabend third in 55.69, followed Berdahl to the wall.
Contreras-Fallico, a sophomore, won the 100 back in 48.35 for his first individual win of the season as he edged teammate
Nick Rounds, who was second in 48.88. Rounds, a freshman, had a 48.55 clocking in the morning prelims that ranks third on the all-time charts.Â
Schultz led off a winning 200 medley relay that included Buhr,
Sara Mayer and
Christina Spomer, who clocked 1:42.86 to move to the top of the Summit League.Â
Emily DiProspero opened the winning 800 free relay and joined
Tatum O'Shea,
Skyler Leverenz and
Carson White in a 7:31.66 effort. DiProspero, who swam in the prelims of the 200 free earlier in the day and clocked 1:50.83 came back to open the relay with a 1:50.66 effort that sits seventh on the 200 free all-time chart.Â
White was third in the 200 free final in 1:51.32 while Leverenz was seventh in 1:55.05.
Emily Kahn, a senior, won the 'B' final of the 100 butterfly in 55.10 which is the best time in the Summit League this season and jumps her up a spot to second on the all-time list. She finished fifth in the event as Mayer was second in 55.66 and Balfanz third in 56.51, both swimming in the 'A' final.Â
Jacob Carlson,
Adam Fisher and Rounds all swam in the 'A' final of the 100 fly and finished 2-3-4, respectively. Rounds clocked a personal best 48.77 in the morning prelims to move into seventh on the Top Ten chart while Fisher, 48.56 from the morning prelims, and Carlson, 48.61 in the finals, sit 2-3 in the Summit League in the event.
Fisher, Berdahl, Carlson and Rounds claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:27.23, the best time in the Summit League this season.
Mairead Powers was runner-up in the 400 IM while
Mady Schmidt finished second in the three-meter diving competition with a new personal best of 248.90.
James Schreiber, a freshman, led off the runner-up 800 free relay, after he posted a personal best of 1:39.40 in finishing second in the 'A' final of the 200 free. Classmates
David Mayer and
Will Barth placed fifth and six, respectively, while the fourth member of the 800 free relay,
Matthew Sorbe, was seventh in the 200 free. Schreiber moved into fifth on the all-time charts while Mayer is now sixth with a 1:39.55 and Barth ninth after his 1:41.06 came in the morning prelims.Â
Two more new entries into the Coyote Top Ten came in the 400 IM from a pair of freshmen in
Alex Parkinson and
Mason Turner. Parkinson placed fifth in 4:00.60 to sit second all-time while Turner was ninth in the final but his prelim time of 4:04.66 checks him into the 10th all-time position.Â
A total of 15 finials (seven women, eight men) are on the slate for Saturday's final day of competition which begins with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., men one-meter diving prelims at 1 p.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
