MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – South Dakota swimming and diving team claimed a pair of Summit League titles during Thursday's day two of the Summit League Championships from Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Coyote women repeated as league champs in the 200 free relay and junior
Emily Kahn did the same in the 50 free.
It was part of a Thursday that saw South Dakota break four school records and have two new entries into the Top 10 all-time charts.
Kahn joined Elizabeth Hoffman as Coyote swimmers with three individual Summit League titles in their history. Kahn, who swam 23.06 in the morning prelims to enter the finals as the fourth seed, got a great start in the finals, was the first to the turn and touched the wall in a school record 22.64 seconds.
Kahn wasn't done setting records as she would break her 50 free school record for the second time in one day with a 22.62 opening split to the victorious 200 free relay. Kahn was joined on the winning 200 free relay squad by
Skyler Leverenz,
Christina Spomer and
Carson White. The same four ladies that won last year, won again this year and also broke the school record for the second straight year, clocking 1:31.30.
Kahn's moved up the Summit League history ladder in the 50 free to third fastest all-time.
Taylor Buhr, a sophomore, swam to a school record in the 200 IM finals, posting a fourth-place finish, in 2:02.54, bumping past two-time Summit League champ
Cassie Ketterling on the school all-time chart.
Earning All-Summit League honors on day two was the men's 200 free relay foursome of
Jacob Carlson,
Adam Fisher,
Mack Sathre and
Zachary Kopp who finished third in 1:20.16.
Kopp, a former Summit League champion in the 50 free, placed fourth in his final go around in that race, finishing in 20.11, a season best time for the school's record holder in the event.
A pair of freshman moved into the Coyote Top 10 list in the 500 free as
Gabbie Ahrendt and
Taylor Horan posted top 10 clocking's during the finals. Ahrendt placed seventh in 5:01.01 and now sits fifth all-time while Horan was 10
th in 5:02.25, just behind teammate
Camilla Brogger-Andersen who won the 'B' final in 4:58.57 to place ninth. Horan is now ninth all-time.
Stella Fairbanks, a senior, was fifth in the one-meter diving competition with a finals score of 236.35 while teammate
Samantha Mersnick, a junior, placed sixth with a 233.60.
Matthew Sorbe, a sophomore, was 10
th in the 500 free, fifth-year senior
Mack Sathre 10
th in the 200 IM and junior
Christina Spomer 10
th in the 50 free, one of five in the 'B' final of that race for the Coyotes.
There was only three individual finals contested on Thursday as the action heats up on Friday with five individual finals along with the men's three-meter diving and the 400 medley relay.
Friday's slate gets underway with prelims at 10 a.m., diving prelims at 12:30 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
