MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – South Dakota swimming and diving team claimed a pair of Summit League titles on Friday at Freeman Aquatic Center during the Summit League Championships.
Adam Fisher earned his first individual Summit League title while the women's 400 medley relay quartet swam to victory to give the women's team relay wins on back-to-back nights.
The Coyotes swam to five school records and five new entries into the top 10 all-time chart along with a trio of individuals placing third on earn All-Summit League honors during the third of the four-day meet.
Heading into Saturday's final day the Coyote women sit in second place in the team standings while the men's team is in third.
Fisher, a junior, became just the sixth Coyote man to win an individual league title when he broke his own school record with a 47.58 in the 100 back. He's the first in school history to go sub-:48.00 in the event and he did it twice on Friday as he also posted a 47.77 clocking in the morning prelims.
The women's team won gold in the 400 medley relay for the first time in league history as
Anna Balfanz,
Taylor Buhr,
Sara Mayer and
Emily Kahn clocked a school-record time of 3:40.32.
Balfanz, a freshman, opened with a 55.31 split for her 100 backstroke and gave way to the sophomore Buhr, who had a 1:01.43 split in the breaststroke. Mayer, a junior, swam her leg of the butterfly in 54.99 before Kahn zoomed home in 48.59 split for her free leg at the end.
Buhr broke the school record in the 100 breast with a third-place finish in 1:01.47 while Kahn was third in the 200 free in a season best 1:49.75.
Kahn will look to defend her league title in the 100 free on Saturday and will most likely be swimming on the 400 free relay to close the championships.
Fisher led off a school record 400 medley relay that finished second as he joined
Jack Berdahl,
Grant Wolner and
Zachary Kopp to clock 3:13.22.
Jacob Carlson, a senior, set a school record in the prelims of the 100 fly in 47.95 and came back to finish third in the finals in 47.97. He also placed sixth in the 100 back finals in 49.37.
Carlson led a strong Coyote contingent to the wall in the 'A' finals of the 100 fly as
Grant Wolner was fourth, Fisher sixth and
Aidan Gantenbein eighth. Wolner's 48.02 time from the prelims moved him to second all-time while Fisher sits third and Gantenbein sixth.
Mack Sathre won the 'B' final in a personal best 48.31 and is fourth all-time.
Balfanz swam to a personal best in the 100 back while winning the 'B' final in 55.07 to place ninth and move up to third all-time.
Grace Schultz was sixth in the race and sits fourth all-time while
Tatum O'Shea placed seventh and
Zoe Afman eighth.
Afman, a freshman, was one of the five individuals to enter the Coyote Top 10 charts when she recorded a 56.25 clocking in the prelims of the 100 back to move into seventh all-time.
Gabbie Ahrendt, who joined the top 10 in the 500 free on Thursday, added her name to the top 10 charts in the 100 fly with a 56.18 time in the morning prelims. Ahrendt, a freshman, would finish seventh in the finals in 56.24 while classmate
Bri Ruark was fourth in 55.64. Ruark moved up one spot to fifth all-time with her 55.52 time from the prelims. Balfanz had a personal best in the finals in 56.49 and sits 10
th all-time.
Matthew Sorbe entered the top 10 charts in the 400 IM with a 4:03.92 performance during the morning prelims and sixth all-time. Fellow freshman,
James Coffey also swam a personal best in the prelims of 4:04.61 and moved up to seventh all-time.
Carson White, a sophomore, and
Nathan Langstraat, a freshman, moved into the top 10 charts in the 200 free as both swam strong in their respective finals. White placed fifth in the 'A' finals in 1:50.23, now sixth all-time, in the same race that Kahn was third while Ahrendt placed eighth and
Skyler Leverenz eighth.
Langstraat posted a 1:40.07 clocking in the 'B' finals, finishing 11
th, while moving into fifth all-time.
Phoebe Paarlberg, a freshman, had a personal best in the finals of the 100 breast in 1:01.78, finishing fourth, right behind Buhr while for the men Wolner was sixth in 54.48 and Berdahl seventh in 54.56.
Mairead Powers swam a season best 4:31.69 to place sixth in the 400 IM while Gantenbein added an eighth in the 100 back where Kopp was the 'B' final champ to finish ninth, one spot ahead of teammate
Joaquin Contreras-Fallico in an event where the top five swimmers on the all-time chart placed first, sixth, eighth, ninth and 10
th.
The final day of the championships will see five individual swimming finals along with the women's three-meter diving competition and the finale, the 400 free relay. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. with prelims followed by the diving prelims at 1230 p.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
