Grange selected to 2024 “So You Want To Be a Coach” class

02.07.2024

ATLANTA—South Dakota sixth-year senior Madison Grange has been selected to the 2024 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in partnership with WeCOACH.

Grange is one of 55 senior women's basketball players selected to the WBCA program in its 21st season. She will participate in a two-day workshop held April 4-5 during the WBCA Convention and the NCAA Women's Final Four in Cleveland.

"I'm really excited and honored to have this opportunity to be a part of the 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program!" said Grange. "I am really excited to learn from the speakers and the college coaches that will be there to learn more about their approaches to coaching players and their on-court philosophies. I'm also excited for the networking opportunities and meeting the other players in the program.

"It was hard to be sidelined by injury in the last year and not be able to play with my team. But the silver lining has been learning to see things from a different perspective and watching the game from the sidelines, which will help me for a coaching job in the future. I want to be a part of the game for as long as I can and I think coaching will give me a great opportunity to do so. I want to have a positive impact on girls on and off the court, like the coaches in my career have done for me!"

The objectives of the 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program are to increase the understanding and application of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women's basketball, increase the understanding and awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching, introduce female basketball players to coaches and administrators, and raise awareness of the existing talent pool of female basketball players who have a passion and interest in coaching the game of women's basketball.

All 55 attendees are recent NCAA women's basketball graduates who are selected based on their academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, their professional resume and a written recommendation by their head coach. Grange was the only Summit League player on the list.

"We are excited for Madison to be in the 2024 class of 'So You Want To Be A Coach' presented by the WBCA," said USD head coach Kayla Karius. "Madison expressed already during her recruiting stage that she saw her future in coaching. This program provides her great opportunities to learn, grow and develop coaching skills while building her network. We have no doubt Madison will represent USD well in this program, but also well into the future."

Grange is the fourth Coyote to participate in the WBCA's 'So' program, following alumnae Chloe Lamb (2022), Madison McKeever (2020) and Lisa Loeffler (2016). Lamb and McKeever are now both coaching in the collegiate ranks at the University of Mary and the University of St. Thomas, respectively.
