Coyotes Match Single-Day Program Record at Ozarks National Invitational

BRANSON, Mo.— The South Dakota women's golf team posted a team score of 2-over par 290, equaling the program record low for a single day performance.  The performance saw them finish in third place out of thirteen teams in the two-day event, held in Branson, Missouri.

The Coyotes saw four golfers finish with a score of 2-over par or better on the day including Catie Nekola (-1), Alexa Wingnean (-1), Lara Gehring (+2) and Emma Henningsson (+2).  The record-tying performance featured a 33-stroke improvement over yesterday, when cold and windy conditions wreaked havoc on the course and forced the cancellation of one of three previously scheduled rounds of play.

"What a team effort today! I'm proud of the ladies on how they battled, especially yesterday, to put us in position," said USD head coach Brett Bennett.  "They made a bunch of birdies today, which allowed us to score. They should be happy with their finish!"

Henningsson and Gehring led Coyotes on the overall individual leaderboards.  Their 2-over par scores saw them both finish 10-over par for the event, good for a tied for 11th place.  Henningsson scored two birdies on the day and finished the two-day event without anything worse than a bogey on any hole.  Freshman Gehring turned in perhaps the best performance of her young Coyote career in this event.  She also scored two birdies two go along with the two she managed yesterday.

Nekola's score of 1-under par 71 today was bettered by only three other golfers on the course.  It gave her a total score of 11-over par which saw her tied for 15th place overall.  Nekola knocked in a team high seven birdies on the day.  Ava Schroeder, representing USD as an individual in this competition, shot a 5-over par 77 today.  That gave her a total score of 11-over par for the event, matching Nekola's 15th place tie overall.

Wingnean matched Nekola's 1-under par 71 today.  In what was perhaps the best single-day performance of the sophomore's Coyote career, also scored seven birdies, matching Nekola's total.  Her score was a 22-stroke improvement over round one and saw her move up 17 spots into a tie for 52nd overall.

Ella Greenberg posted an 8-over par 80 today, giving her a total score of 15-over par over two days, good for a tie for 36th place.  Playing as an individual, Avery O'Donnell improved four strokes from day one to post a 9-over par 81.  The 22-over par two-day total saw her finish tied for 58th place in the 71-player field.

South Dakota's team score of 37-over par saw them finish in third place out of thirteen teams.  They were one stroke behind second-place Middle Tennessee State, and nine stokes ahead of fourth place Toledo.

Oral Roberts won the team race at 13-over par, while the Golden Eagles' Christina Riu won the individual race by nine stokes with a score of 4-under par.  South Dakota won this event last year.
