UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash.— The South Dakota golf team sits in a tie for tenth place out of eighteen teams after the first two rounds of the SU Invite at Chambers Bay. The highlight of the day came from
Nick LaMotte, who knocked in a hole-in-one on hole fifteen during the second round of play. For LaMotte, it was his first ever hole-in-one of his golf career at any level.
The Coyotes' top finisher on the day was
Max Schmidtke, who finished with a 3-over par two-round score of 145, good for a tie for 33
rd. Schmidtke was 4-over par in the first round, but rallied with a one-under par showing in round two. In total, Schmidtke had seven birdies on the day, and played a consistent second round with just two bogeys.
A pair of freshmen were next in line for USD.
Cole Witherow and
Joe Rohlwing tied for 40
th place with two-round scores of 146, 4-over par. Witherow supplied one of three eagles for South Dakota on the day with a 2 on the par-4 second hole in round two. Rohlwing was able to play consistent golf all day, with five birdies and no double-bogeys or worse on the day.
Logan Hamak was among the tournament leaders after a round one performance which saw him turn in a score of 68, good for 3-under par. Hamak's round one score was just two strokes short of an all-time top ten single-round score in USD history, and saw him birdie four holes while making just one bogey. After a 79 in round two, Hamak finished the day tied for 51
st place with a 5-over par 147.
LaMotte's hole-in-one was one of two eagles he posted on the day. The other was a 3 on the par-5 18
th hole in round one. He finished with a score of 151, 9-over par and good for a tie for 77
th place.
Ryan Neff, playing as an individual, tied LaMotte's total with a 9-over 151 as well. He knocked in seven birdies on the day.
The Coyotes finished with a team score of 13-over par 581, good for a tie for tenth place (with Tarleton) in the eighteen-team field. USD is just five strokes shy of finishing as high as sixth. Oregon State leads the team race with a score of 11-under par. The Beavers' Jackson Lake leads the individual race with a score of 9-under par.
