Coyotes add graduate transfer in Monahan

04.15.2024

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota women's basketball coach Kayla Karius has announced the addition of graduate transfer Miah Monahan from Eastern Illinois. She will join the Coyotes for her final season of eligibility.

Monahan was an all-Ohio Valley Conference point guard this past season while averaging 11.2 points and 5.1 assists per game for the Panthers. She comes to South Dakota with 736 points, 349 assists and 307 rebounds in 91 career games.

"We are excited about the addition of Miah to our program," said Karius. "We believe she will make an impact on and off the court. She is an experienced guard who has proven herself at the collegiate level. Welcome to the USD community, Miah and the Monahan family!"

Monahan moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore and has led the Panthers in assists the last two seasons. Her 169 assists in 2023-24 led the Ohio Valley and ranked 35th nationally. She tallied the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the OVC while playing more than 35 minutes per game.

Hailing from Silver Lake, Minnesota, Monahan garnered all-state honors and was a finalist for Minnesota Miss Basketball as a senior after leading Glencoe-Silver Lake High School to the Minnesota Class 2A state semifinals and a 19-5 record. While playing for her father, Jeff, she became the school's all-time leading scorer as a senior, completing her prep career with more than 2,200 points. Monahan averaged 24.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game during her final prep season. She was a four-time all-Wright County Conference honoree on the basketball court. She also competed in volleyball, track & field, tennis and softball in high school.

A College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District honoree as a junior, Monahan graduated from EIU in three years and plans to pursue her MBA through South Dakota's Beacom School of Business.
