URBANA Ill.— The South Dakota men's golf team wrapped up play in day one of the Fighting Illini Collegiate today. Day one featured two rounds of play. The Fighting Illini Collegiate features a tough field that includes a number of power six and top tier mid major programs.
Pacing USD on the day was
Nick LaMotte. The Coyote senior posted a 74 and 75 for a grand total of 7-over par 149 over two rounds. LaMotte knocked in six birdies, three in each round. His score seeds him tied for 23
rd place. Following LaMotte was
Max Schmidtke, who posted USD's best individual round score with a 73 in round one. That round saw him hit two birdies and score just four bogeys. His second round 80 saw him with a final score of 11-over par 153, good for a tie for 41
st place.
Ryan Neff turned in an 81 and a 78 today, good for a two round score of 17-over par 159. He sits in a tie for 60
th place. He was followed by
Logan Hamak, who shot an 82 and a 78, for a final score of 18-over par 160. He is tied for 62
nd place. Freshman
Cole Witherow turned in a pair of 81s. His final score of 20-over par 162 sees him in a tie for 65
th place.
USD had a team score of 53-over par 621 over two rounds. They currently sit in 12
th place overall. The Fighting Illini Invite field features four Big Ten teams (who currently occupy the top four spots in the standings), three Big East teams, and three mid-major teams that finished in the top three of their league last year.
Illinois leads their home event by 14 strokes over second place Northwestern. Their team score is a 4-over par 572. A pair of Fighting Illini, Max Herendeen and Ryan Voois, sit atop the individual leaderboard with a 2-under par score of 140.
