MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – South Dakota women's tennis played its second event of the fall schedule by competing in the Gopher Fall Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Coyotes had seven competing athletes with six of them competing in the singles portion while head coach
Brett Barnett switched up some of his doubles tandems over the course of the three-day event.Â
Grace Chadick continued her strong start to the fall season by winning all three of her singles matches over the course of the three-day event.Â
"I thought overall we had a successful Gopher Invite," Barnett said. "It was a tricky week having a quick turnaround from Air Force and going from altitude to sea level and playing primarily indoors.
"I thought we handled the different conditions and teams very well."
Chadick, a senior, is off to a 6-1 start to the fall thanks to straight-set wins in Minneapolis over opponents from Omaha, Drake and University of Chicago.Â
Bea Havlickova and
Selena Bird each went 2-1 in the event while
Sorcha Caves and
Amanda de Oliveira had 1-2 marks.Â
Havlickova, a senior, earned straight-set victories over Omaha and Northern Iowa and is now 5-2 on the fall. Bird, a junior, defeated opponents from North Dakota and Omaha.Â
The senior doubles duo of Havlickova and Chadick went 3-1 during the Invite with wins over Creighton, North Dakota and University of Chicago.Â
Anna Medvyedyeva and
Katarina Curcic teamed on day one to post a pair of doubles wins with triumphs over Marquette (6-3) and Creighton (6-2).
"Everyone competed and fought very well," said Barnett. "We had a couple of close losses that could've went our way but we need to be a little better closing out games and matches. The positive take is we were in nearly every match that we lost and if we keep giving ourselves chances to win, we'll turn those around."
South Dakota is back in action for the third consecutive weekend as it heads to Fort Collins, Colorado for the Jon Messick Invite that runs Sept. 27-29.Â
"We have another quick turnaround, heading back to Colorado for another tough test at CSU with some Mountain West and Power 4 teams," added Barnett. "We're getting closer to putting it all together and this will be a special group when that happens."
