SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- South Dakota women's swimming team members
Gabbie Ahrendt and
Taylor Horan swam to victories on day one of the Coyote Invitational held Friday inside Midco Aquatic Center.
The women's team had eight top five finishes while the men's squad saw six top five finishes during a lite five event -- two relays, three individual events -- first session of the seven-team meet.
Horan, a sophomore from Fayetteville, Arkansas, led a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle, clocking 5:03.21 while teammate, freshman
Emily DiProspero, was second in 5:04.50. It was a season best and less than a second off a personal best for Horan.
Dylan Hogenson, a freshman, was fifth in the event with a season best of 5:12.92.
Ahrendt, a sophomore, led the Coyote chargs in the 200 IM, touching the wall first in 2:06.46.
Ahrendt swam the opening leg of the 400 medley relay, teaming with
Taylor Buhr,
Alexa Van Dyne and
Madilyn Gehrke for a runner-up 3:58.10. The quartet of
Tatum O'Shea,
Liv Caldwell, Madeline Scrank and
Carson White was third in 4:00.01 and the foursome of
Anna Balfanz,
Shannon Banark,
Sara Mayer and
Grace Schultz placed fourth in 4:00.18.
Mayer, a senior, opened the 200 free relay that finished third where she was joined by
Skyler Leverenz, Schultz and
Emily Kahn in clocking 1:36.19.
Jackson Nedved, a sophomore, had the highest individual finish for the men's team with a third-place showing of 1:54.63 in the 200 IM.
Will Barth, a sophomore, turned in a fourth-place finish in the 500 free in 4:45.47.
The men's foursome of
Adam Fisher,
Grant Wolner,
Jacob Carlson and
James Schreiber placed second in the 400 medley relay in 3:24.47. The quartet of
Joaquin Contreras-Fallico,
Jack Berdahl,
Alex Landmark and
David Mayer were fourth in 3:27.66 and the team of
Jordan Hogue, Nedved,
Xander Taylor and
Matthew Sorbe finished fifth in 3:32.91.
The second and final day of the Coyote Invitational begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the diving at 1 p.m. and the final session at 4 p.m.
South Dakota will honor its 16 seniors in a ceremony to begin the morning.
