PREVIEW: Yotes Prepare for Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls

VERMILLION, S.D. — No. 22 South Dakota takes their two-game win streak and makes their second trip into the state of Iowa this season to face their third opponent that hails from the state in a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) clash with the Northern Iowa Panthers Saturday afternoon from the UNI-Dome.

The game will be streamed on with Brad Wells and Justin Surrency on the call from Cedar Falls. You can listen to the voice of the Coyotes John Thayer on the Coyote Sports Network beginning at 12 p.m. (noon) for the pre-game show with Gary Gulver and Jerry Palleschi, joining Thayer for the call at 1 p.m.

KEY STORYLINES
  • South Dakota and Northern Iowa meet for the 54th time in series history in a series that dates back to a 0-0 tie in 1899.
  • MVFC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After tying the South Dakota single-game record for field goals made at Indiana State, kicker Will Leyland has been named the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • PACING THE FCS: L.J. Phillips Jr. leads the nation in net rushing yards (986), second in rushing yards per game (140.9), second in rushing attempts (141), tied second in rushing touchdowns (11), and seventh in yards per carry (6.99).  
  • LEADING THE MVFC: Punter Tyler Ebel leads the MVFC in yards per punt (47.46), kicker Will Leyland leads in field goals made (8), and WR Larenzo Fenner leads in yards per catch (22.6).
  • USD leads the league in rushing yards, rushing attempts, and team made field goals.
  • South Dakota has won 16 of their last 19 MVFC games dating back to the 2023 season.
  • Phillips Jr. on pace to become just the third Coyote to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, being nearly there (986 yards, 141 carries).
  • Aidan Bouman holds a 25-13 record as the starting quarterback at South Dakota and has thrown a touchdown pass in five of the six games this season with a season-high three against the Racers.
  • With four 100-yard rushing games this season – all from Phillips Jr. – South Dakota now has had 71 100-yard rushing games in the Division I FCS era with Phillips Jr.'s 301 yards against Northern Colorado being the Division I single-game record.
  • Defensively, LB Gabriel Hardman (47) and DB Roman Tillmon (46) lead the team in tackles, and DL Caden Crawford leads the team with his 7.0 tackles for loss.
  • Walsh (at Lamar), Tillmon (vs. UNC), Nate Ewell (at NDSU) are the only three Yotes with 10+ tackles in a game this season with Tillmon now holding the season-high.
  • Mikey Munn has been on a tear at cornerback with a career-high two interceptions against Drake and leads the team with five pass-break ups on the season.
  • The Coyote defense held the Sycamores to the Johansen era low for rushing yards in a game (85).
  • South Dakota is in their 130th season of college football and with their 31st head coach in program history.  
  • HC Travis Johansen has won three-straight home games as the home win streak extends to 11-straight games.
  • A win on Saturday would put Johansen tied for sixth-best in program history for wins as a first-year head coach.
  • The home win streak currently sits fifth in the FCS among active home win streaks, behind two MVFC streaks (SDSU, 32-straight & NDSU, 15-straight).
  • South Dakota holds an all-time program record of 584-567-35 entering Saturday. In the Division I FCS era, South Dakota has won 90 games (90-107).

  • South Dakota and Northern Iowa meet for the 54th time in a series that dates back to a 0-0 tie in 1899.
  • UNI holds the series lead, 31-21-1, with a 15-6 advantage in their own Dome.
  • Northern Iowa has had the upper hand in the last 10 meetings, winning six of those contests. Though, South Dakota has won two of the last three meetings.
  • One of the two teams have been ranked inside the FCS top-25 in eight of the last 10 meetings, dating back to 2023.
  • In the last 10 meetings, only once have both teams been ranked at the time of the game (2021) with the Yotes prevailing, 34-21, in Cedar Falls.
