IOWA CITY, Iowa --
Joaquin Contreras-Fallico and the men's 400 medley relay struck gold on Friday evening at the Summit League Championships inside the CRWC on the University of Iowa campus.
Contreras-Fallico, a sophomore, claimed the title in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in a personal best 47.75 while just edging teammate
Nick Rounds, who placed second in 47.92.Â
Contreras-Fallico's sprint to the title came in the final individual swim of Friday's evening session and the 100 back had a total of six Coyotes, three each in the 'A' and 'B' final.
Adam Fisher, the defending champ in the event, placed fourth in 48.00.
Contreras-Fallico also led off the 400 medley relay, joining teammates
Jack Berdahl,
Grant Wolner and
David Mayer, who initially touched the wall in second place in 3:13.53. Denver, though, touching first in 3:12.25, was disqualified, thus bumping the Coyotes up to 1st place in the event.Â
Rounds was one of five Coyotes to finish as league runner-up in individual races, which also included a tie for second between teammates in the women's 200 free.
South Dakota had eight individual All-Summit league swims and a school record on day three of the four-day championships to go with a combined 42 point gathering swims while the women's 400 medley relay also finished second.
The Coyotes enter the fourth and final day of competition sitting in second place in the team standings as the men have 497.5 points and the women have 507 points.Â
Grace Schultz, a junior, set a school record in the prelims of the 100 back, touching in 54.94 while coming back in the finals to place fourth in 55.18.Â
Schultz led off the runner-up 400 medley relay, teaming with
Phoebe Paarlberg,
Sara Mayer and
Emily Kahn in finishing in 3:41.44.Â
Berdahl, a senior, led four Coyotes in the 'A' final of hte 100 breast with a runner-up finish in 53.78. He was followed by Wolner in third in 54.62,
Ethan LaBounty in fifth with a personal best 55.07 and
Parker Sonnabend in seventh in 55.76. LaBounty, a freshman, moved into the Coyote Top Ten at sixth all-time.Â
Wolner, a senior, was third in the 100 fly in 48.09, followed by teammates Fisher in fourth,
Jacob Carlson in sixth and Rounds in seventh. Fisher touched in 48.18, Carlson in 48.83 and Rounds in 48.99 while
Xander Taylor posted a personal best in the 'B' final in 49.23 to place 11th and move into the Coyote Top Ten at No. 10.Â
Alex Parkinson, a freshman, became just the second Coyote to break four minutes in the 400 IM with his 3:58.01 clocking in the 'A' final, good for sixth place.
Keegan Henning, a fifth-year senior, posted a big personal best while winning the 'B' final to place ninth in 4:01.24 and move all the way up to third all-time.
Mason Turner, a freshman, was 13th in 4:06.56.
Mayer, a freshman, led a trio of Coyotes to the wall in the 'A' final of the 200 free, placing fifth in 1:39.46.
Matthew Sorbe was seventh in 1:40.13,
James Schreiber eighth in 1:40.52 while
Luke Kelley, swimming in the 'B' final, clocked a personal best 1:40.25 to place 11th. Mayer moved up one spot to No. 5 all-time while Kelley enters the Coyote Top Ten at No. 10.Â
Carlson placed 11th in the 100 back in 49.67 followed by Taylor in 12th in a personal best 49.78 and freshman
Jordan Hogue 16th in 50.87. Taylor moved into the Top Ten at eighth all-time.Â
South Dakota women received a rare teammate tie for second place between
Carson White and
Emily DiProspero in the 200 free while Paarlberg also earned a runner-up finish in the 100 breast.
White, a junior, and DiProspero, a freshman, touched the wall in 1:49.44 while
Skyler Leverenz was eighth in 1:52.07. White's personal best bumped her from seventh to fourth on the all-time charts.Â
Paarlberg, a sophomore, clocked 1:02.14 in the 100 breast while teammates
Taylor Buhr and
Madilyn Gehrke, finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in 1:03.48 and 1:03.49.
Christina Spomer, a senior, was 11th for the second straight year, clocking 1:04.80 and junior
Blake Currie placed 13th in 1:05.10.Â
Kahn, a senior, placed fourth in the 100 fly in 55.47 while
Sara Mayer was fifth in 55.86 and
Anna Balfanz seventh in 56.35. Balfanz, a sophomore, had to win a swim-off to reach the 'A' final after two competitors tied for the eighth and final spot in the 'A' final. Her swim off time of 55.57 was a personal best and moved her up four spots to No. 6 all-time.
Madeline Schrank, a feshman, clocked a personal best 56.08 while winning the 'B' final, placing ninth, and moving into the Coyote Top Ten at eighth all-time.Â
Balfanz was seventh in the 'A' final of the 100 back in 56.08 while
Tatum O'Shea placed 13th in 57.11 and
Zoe Afman 16th in 57.87.
Dylan Hogenson was 15th in the 400 IM in 4:35.93.Â
Samantha Mersnick, a senior, placed fourth on the three-meter diving board eventh with a point total of 242.70 while junior
Mady Schmidt was 12th with a 222.55 and frehsman
Nellie Dalsin 13th with a 221.65.Â
Saturday's final day of competition will see individual finals in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly along with the men's three-meter diving competition and the final event of the championships, the 400 free relay.Â
