COMMERCE, Texas — The Coyotes picked up two wins on day two of the East Texas A&M Leadoff with wins over Stephen F. Austin and East Texas A&M in the second game of the day.
Game 1 vs Stephen F. Austin – W, 5-2
After three scoreless innings to start the contest,
Autumn Iversen put the Yotes on the board first with a blast over the left field fence, her first homerun of the season. With two outs in the inning, Rylee Jones tacked on another run with a double down the left field line that scored
Alyssa Thorson.
South Dakota added to its lead in the next inning, after a
Tatum Villotta double to start the frame,
Delaney White reached on a bunt single. The play resulted with Villotta touching home plate on a SFA throwing error.
After driving in a run earlier in the game, Jones would touch home plate on a sacrifice fly from
Faith Mills that put USD up 5-0 in the sixth. SFA would make things interesting late, pulling with two runs of the Yotes with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. However,
Clara Edwards closed out the Coyote win and earned her first save of the season with a strikeout.
The Coyotes recorded 11 hits in the game and five players recorded two hits each. Five Yotes tallied extra base hits in Villotta, White, Jones,
Tahjzha Botts and Iversen.
Campbell German made her first start in the circle as a Coyote and tossed 3.2 innings in total with five strikeouts.
McKenna Young picked up the win after throwing 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Game 2 vs East Texas A&M – W, 5-3
Edwards tossed her first complete game of the season in the game two win with six strikeouts and allowed just four hits.
Iversen got the scoring started for the second game in a row with a single through the left side that scored
Ella McGee. The two teams would go scoreless over the next four innings before the Lions took a 2-1 lead with a two-RBI double in the fifth.
Edwards helped herself out in the top of the sixth with a double to right center that scored
Brooke Carey and
Brylee Hempey. The Yotes tacked on two more runs in the frame on back-to-back infield singles by Villotta and Iversen.
Holding a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning, Edwards retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts to close out the 2-0 day for the Yotes.
The Yotes had 11 hits for the second game in a row and 10 or more for the third straight game. Edwards had the lone extra base hit in the game, while Hempey and Carey each had a stolen base.
The Coyotes close out their opening weekend slate of games tomorrow morning against Stephen F. Austin at 9:00 a.m.
