HAMPTON, Va. — South Dakota closed out a 5-0 weekend in Virginia Sunday with a 9-0 win over Hampton and have now won nine straight games. The Coyotes have shutout their opponents in four straight games for the first time in the Division I era and have outscored opponents 31-0 over those contests.
With two outs in the first inning, the Coyotes strung together three straight singles to score the first run of the game off the bat of
Madison Evans. The Yotes loaded the bases on the next at-bat, but the three runners would be left stranded as the Pirates escaped the innings with just one run allowed.
Clara Edwards made quick work of the Pirates in the first, with the help of the left side of the infield, with three straight groundouts to
Brooke Carey and
Rylie Jones.
Aggressiveness on the base paths found a pair of Coyotes in scoring position with one out in the second.
Alyssa Thorson doubled down the left field line to bring home both Yotes and would later score herself on an infield single by Evans to give USD a 4-0 edge. After a leadoff single by the Pirates in the bottom of the second, Edwards recorded her first strikeout of the day and the Coyote infield turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.
Autumn Iversen legged out her second triple of the season in the third and would later put the Yotes up 5-0, scoring on a wild pitch. USD added another run in the sixth with Thorson crossing home on an infield error by Hampton.
Back-to-back triples from
Tahjzha Botts and Villotta scored three runs as South Dakota expanded its lead to 9-0 in the top of the seventh. The Pirates found a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but
McKenna Young closed out the contest with two straight strikeouts.
Tatum Villotta extended her hit streak to 16 by going 2-for-4 from the plate today with one run and an RBI. Evans was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs. The Coyotes tallied five extra base hits with two doubles and three triples, while Thorson and
Brynnly German each had a stolen base.
Edwards picks up her seventh win in the circle and moves to 7-3 on the season after going 4.0 innings while allowing just one hit.
Campbell German pitched one inning in relief, while Young closed out the final two innings with three strikeouts.
The Coyotes will take their nine game win streak to Conway, South Carolina next weekend for a three game series against Coastal Carolina starting on March 9.
