VERMILLION, S.D. –
Lydia Knapp broke a three-year-old school record in the women's hammer throw Saturday at the South Dakota Challenge at the Lillibridge Track Complex in Vermillion.
Knapp recorded a mark of 214-1 (65.26 meters) in the hammer throw, winning the event over teammate
Delaney Smith, who took second at 181-1 (55.2m). Knapp's school record throw puts her second in the Summit League and 15
th in the NCAA. The previous record of 213-9 was held by Lara Boman, set in 2022. Knapp is the discus school record holder as well. She also won the discus with a throw of 162-3 (49.45m).
Coyote throws also picked up an event win in the men's hammer throw, where
Quincy Warren threw a personal best 196-3 (59.83m). Warren ranks second in the Summit League with that throw, and is now sixth on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 list.
Wyatt Pruce also recorded a personal best, throwing 179-4 (54.66m) to take fourth. It ranks him fourth in the Summit League this season.
The field events continued to be friendly for the Yotes, as they added titles in the men's high jump and both the men's and women's triple jumps.
Joe Lynch, on his birthday, jumped a season's best 7-0 ½ (2.15m) to win the event title. He now ranks No. 19 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Summit League. Teammate
Landon Olson reached a new outdoor best at 6-11 ½ (2.12m), which ranks him No. 30 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the conference. He is now also in ninth place alone in the Coyote Outdoor Top 10.
The men's triple jump champion,
Carsen Staehr, recorded a jump of 48-4 ¾ (14.75m), a new season's best that has him fourth in the Summit League. Staehr also took third in the long jump with a season's best 23-5 ¼ (7.14m) which has him tied for sixth in the Summit League in the event. Teammate
Bennett Schwenn took second in the long jump at 24-3 (7.39m), which puts him fourth in the conference this season.
On the women's side,
Mae Siegel recorded a jump of 38-0 (11.58m) in the triple jump to win the event. That puts her seventh in the Summit League this year. She also took third in the long jump at 17-8 ¼ (5.39m). In the high jump,
Danii Anglin took second with a season's best 5-7 (1.7m).
The win played a factor on the track Saturday. Winds over 20 miles per hour made things difficult for athletes running in distance events, and results in wind readings too high for some heats of short distance events to be counted towards record keeping.
Averi Schmeichel continued her tear in the hurdle races by sweeping the 100 and 400-meter hurdle events. In the 100-meter hurdles, Schmeichel ran a 13.38 to win the event. In the 400-meter hurdles, she ran a new personal best of 58.93, which ranks her first in the Summit League and No. 47 in the NCAA. She ranks third on the USD Outdoor Top 10 list.
Schmeichel's teammates
Brandy Pulse and
Hadley Cheatum rounded out a Coyote sweep of the podium, running 1:03.87 and 1:04.27.
Sara Reifenrath won the women's 200-meters with a time of 23.47, and teammate
Caelyn Valandra ran 24.44 for third in the event.
Sydney Stodden took second in the women's 400-meters with a time of 56.61.
Jaden Damiano followed Schmeichel's hurdle performances with a pair of event wins of his own. In the 110-meter hurdles, he ran 13.75 to win the race and teammate
Mikael Grace took third (13.89). Damiano (54.34) and Grace (55.63) took the top two spots in the 400-meter hurdles.
Tommy Nikkel placed third in the 400-meters with a time of 48.27, and while he placed off the podium in the 200-meters, his time of 21.25, wind-aided, ranks him 10
th on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 list.
In the distance events,
Alyssa Gerth won the 5,000-meters with a time of 18:29.44 with teammate
Reese Young-Oestmann taking third at 19:11.13.
Peyton Svehla and
Taylor Byerley took the top two spots in the women's 3,000-meter steeple, running times of 11:48.21 and 12:02.84.
Melanie Pankow took third in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:52.03.
Riley Ruhaak added a second place finish in the men's steeple in a time of 10:44.23.
Tommy Hensley won the 800-meters with a time of 1:53.7.
In the relays, the South Dakota women's 4x400 took the top spot with a time of 3:46.67, a new season's best that ranks atop the Summit League. The men's 4x400 also ran a season's best, clocking 3:18.61, the second ranked time in the conference this season. The men's 4x100 relay squad also had a strong performance, taking second in the event with a season's best and Summit League leading time of 41.03.
Wrapping up heptathlon action from Friday,
Bre Dunn placed fourth and Katelyn Langford sixth after the final three events Satuday. Dunn's total came to 4,445 points with Langford's at 4,081. Dunn's total ranks her fifth in the Summit league with Langford ninth. Dunn took second in the heptathlon 800-meters with a time of 2:27.94 on Saturday. Langford's top finish of the day was in the same event, taking fourth in the 400-meters with a time of 2:30.14.
The Coyotes are set to trek west next week for their California swing. The Coyotes will compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Pacific Coast Invitational, and the Mt. SAC Relays during their time out west.
