Coyotes earn three Summit League honors following strong weekend at South Dakota Challenge

04.15.2025

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the second time in three weeks, the South Dakota track and field program picked up multiple Kwik Star Summit League Track and Field Peak Performer honors, taking three honors this week after strong performances at the South Dakota Challenge over the weekend.

The Coyotes swept the women's awards for the second time this outdoor season with Marleen Mülla winning the Kwik Star Outdoor Women's Field Peak Performer of the Week and Averi Schmeichel picking up her second Kwik Star Outdoor Women's Track Peak Performer of the Week honor this season. Joe Lynch gave South Dakota its first Kwik Star Outdoor Men's Field Peak Performer of the Week award this season.

Mülla, a native of Rakvere, Estonia, was a record-breaker over the weekend, becoming the facility record holder at the Lillibridge Track Complex in the women's pole vault with a personal best 14-11 ½ (4.56m). That mark ranks third in the NCAA this season, second on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 list, and is the Estonian National Record. Mülla earned her fifth outdoor weekly honor of her career and 10th overall.

Schmeichel continues her tear during the outdoor season, recording a pair of victories in the hurdle events over the weekend. Schmeichel ran a personal best 58.93 in the 400-meter hurdles to win the race by nearly five seconds Saturday. That time is the top time in the Summit League and ranks No. 26 in the NCAA West Region. Schmeichel also ranks No. 3 on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 in the event. In the 100-meter hurdles, Schmeichel ran a 6.5 m/s wind aided 13.38 to win that race as well. Schmeichel earned her second career weekly honor.

Joe Lynch won his first weekly honor after picking up an event win in the men's high jump Saturday. Lynch cleared 7-0 ½ (2.15m) to win the high jump. He is the first Summit League athlete this year to clear the 7-0 benchmark in the high jump. He ranks No. 12 in the NCAA West Region and No. 20 overall in the NCAA.
