Yotes take second at Summit League Championships

Iowa City, Iowa — South Dakota came in second at the Summit League Conference Championships for both the men's and women's teams. The Yotes earned 41 medals over the four day meet in Iowa City.
 
Nick Rounds was named the men's Championship MVP after earning six gold medals for the Coyotes, including individual wins in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 back, posting NCAA Standard times in the 50 free and 100 back events.
 
Brock Russell took home the men's Newcomer of the Championship award. The freshman standout scored 52 points to help lead the Yotes to a second-place team finish, capturing gold in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second in the 200 IM, and placing fourth in the 100 breast.
 
Jason Mahowald was named Coach of the Year after leading the Yotes to their runner-up finish and overseeing multiple individual and relay gold medals. 
Distance freestyle started the individual events with a standout showing from the Coyotes. Emily DiProspero claimed the women's 1650 freestyle title in 16:48.52, and Camilla Brogger-Andersen added bronze in 17:00.13 to secure two more medals for South Dakota. 

The Coyotes closed the distance events in dominant fashion as sophomore Alexander Parkinson won the men's 1650 freestyle in an NCAA-qualifying time of 15:04.40 to secure the conference title. 

The evening began in the women's 200 backstroke where freshman Henley Hatzung secured bronze with a time of 2:00.12 to open the medal count for the Coyotes. 

South Dakota then surged in the men's 200 backstroke as Joaquin Contreras-Fallico captured gold in 1:42.68 while teammate Trey Smith added bronze in 1:45.78 to give USD two spots on the podium. 

In sprint action, Nicholas Rounds delivered another championship performance by winning the men's 100 freestyle in 42.98 for the Coyotes' first individual swimming title of the night. 

Senior Taylor Buhr followed with a conference title of her own in the women's 200 breaststroke, touching first in 2:13.36 to add another gold medal to her championship résumé. 

The Coyotes swept the podium in the women's 200 butterfly as Dawsyn Green placed second in 2:01.05 and Maddie Schrank took third in 2:05.11 for a strong scoring boost. 

Another victory came in the men's 200 breaststroke where freshman Brock Russell raced to gold in 1:57.26 to lead the field. 

South Dakota also reached the podium in the women's 400 freestyle relay, where the team of Madilyn Gehrke, Anna Balfanz, Gabrielle Ahrendt and Carson White finished second in 3:23.85 to earn silver. 

The Coyotes closed the meet with a championship performance in the men's 400 freestyle relay as Nicholas Rounds, James Schreiber, Jordan Hogue and Matthew Sorbe combined for a winning time of 2:55.82 to claim gold.
