VERMILLION --The 1999 season was again a very solid season for the men's and women's cross country programs, under the direction of Scott Munsen. South Dakota men's team earned an 11th place finish at the nationals as junior all-American Jason Probasco finished 32nd to earn all-American status. Wedel, the only South Dakota women's team member to qualify for nationals, finished third for her second straight top five performance in two seasons.

This was Probasco's second all-American certificate in cross country. Probasco finished second at both the North Central Conference and North Central Region meets to qualify for nationals. The team also qualifed for the seventh consecutive year. At the NCC meet, Probasco had a 25:39.9. He ran a 31:14.2 at the region meet. Other individuals who placed in the top 10 at the region meet included Noah Deyo, 5th, 31:31.2, and Solomon Richards, 6th, 31:47.7.

Wedel, who finished fourth in the country as a freshman one year ago, continued to exhibit her outstanding talent. She won both the NCC meet (20:53.1) and the North Central region competition (21:18.5). She is the only South Dakota runner to finish in the top five nationally in her first two years. The Coyotes women's team finished third at the region and narrowly missed qualifying as a team for the national meet.
