The #18 South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team (11-2, 5-1 in the NCC) will face a big test this weekend when they travel north for North Central Conference men's basketball games. The Coyotes will play the #9 North Dakota Fighting Sioux (12-1, 5-0 in the NCC) on Friday, Jan. 12 at the Hyslop Sports Center in Grand Forks and North Dakota State Bison (9-3, 2-3 in the NCC) at the Bison Sports Arena on Saturday, Jan. 13 in Fargo. The South Dakota-North Dakota battle is a key game as a Coyotes' win moves South Dakota into a first-place tie atop the NCC with North Dakota. On Saturday night, the Coyotes will try and win their fourth straight game over NDSU. Both men's games start at 8 p.m. (30 minutes after the women's games). South Dakota rebounded from their first conference loss of the season by turning back Northern Colorado, 80-74, at the DakotaDome, Jan. 5. Junior forward Jimmie Foster had his best game as a Coyote with 30 points in the win. South Dakota defeated Nebraska-Omaha, 83-70 on Jan. 6 as junior guard
Paul Marshall had a Coyote career-high of 33 points.

USD-UND SERIES: North Dakota and South Dakota will meet for the 159th time with the Fighting Sioux holding an 89-69 lead. The Coyotes have won three in a row against North Dakota. The Coyotes defeated the Fighting Sioux 95-89, Jan. 14, in Grand Forks and won 66-62 Feb. 12 at the DakotaDome. During the Dave Boots' era, the Coyotes have won 19 of 28 against North Dakota. The last North Dakota win over South Dakota was an 86-83 victory on Jan. 8, 1999 at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes have beaten the Fighting Sioux three consecutive times in Grand Forks. North Dakota last defeated South Dakota at Grand Forks on Jan. 3, 1997 (97-68). This series has featured some of the best basketball played in the NCC in the past 10 years. One of the best regional finals occurred during the 1992-93 season when South Dakota advanced to the Elite Eight Championships for the first time. That Coyote team, featuring John Brenegan, Randy Rosenquist, Chris Jones, Shane Murphy among others, defeated North Dakota 66-64 in overtime at the Hyslop Sports Center in Grand Forks.
USD-NDSU SERIES: South Dakota and NDSU will meet for the 154th meeting between the schools with the Bison leading 81-72. South Dakota won both games a year ago, defeating the Bison, 71-52 in Fargo, and 74-62 at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes have won three in a row. The last Bison win over South Dakota was a 105-101 OT victory during the 1998-99 season at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes have won two in a row at the Bison Sports Arena and have taken three of the last four in games played at Fargo. NDSU's last victory was a 76-71 decision in 1997-98. Since the 1988-89 season when Dave Boots took over as head coach at South Dakota, the Coyotes have won 16 of 28 games over the Bison. The Coyotes defeated NDSU, 61-58, in a North Central Regional Final at the DakotaDome in March 1994. The win allowed South Dakota to advance to the Elite Eight Tournament for the second straight season.
ON NORTH DAKOTA: The Fighting Sioux moved up to #9 in the NABC/Division II Bulletin poll released on January 8. The Sioux are also ranked #1 in the North Central Region. UND is 12-1 and 5-0 in the NCC. They have a 6-0 record at home and are 6-1 away. North Dakota is 2-0 at home and 3-0 away in the NCC. The Sioux have hit 341 of 777 field goals for 43 percent and have made 101 of 254 three-point baskets for 40 percent and 199 of 274 free throws for 73 percent. This season the Sioux have outscored opponents, 444 to 406 in the first half while holding a 530 to 472 second half-scoring advantage. Overall, UND has outscored opponents, 982 to 885. Kyle Behrens leads the Sioux in scoring at 17.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds. He is averaging 19.2 points per game in NCC play. SIOUX HAVE WON 12 IN A ROW: UND is riding a 12-game winning streak since they lost their season opener to Kansas, 92-61 at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. The Sioux also had a 12-game streak in 1999-00, before losing at Nebraska-Omaha. The longest UND winning streak during the Glas tenure is 13 in which UND achieve twice in 1990-91. UND is in its 96th season of men's
basketball with an overall record of 1,305-788 (.624).
UND RALLIES PAST NDSU: The Fighting Sioux rallied from an eight point deficit to turn back North Dakota State, 75-67 in NCC basketball Saturday at the Bison Sports Arena. Kyle Behrens led UND with a career-high 24 points. Curtis Munlin had a career-best 18 points and Tom Jacobson added 17. The Bison was led by sophomore guard Denver TenBroek who had a career-high 29 points. The Sioux rallied on the strength of outstanding free throw shooting as UND made 21 of 25 from the charity stripe in the second half. The Sioux gained the lead at 57-56 on a dunk by Behrens with 6:58 to play. It was part of a 13-2 run by UND in the second 10 minutes of the second half.
ON NORTH DAKOTA STATE: The Bison own a 9-3 record including 2-3 in the NCC. NDSU is 1-2 at home and 1-1 away in NCC games. The Bison recorded a 7-0 mark during the nonconference season. Overall, the Bison are 6-2 at home and 3-1 away. Sophomore Denver TenBroek leads the Bison in scoring at 18.3 per game. He has hit 32 of 80 three-point baskets and 70 of 153 field goals (46
percent). Joe Hedin is adding 12.6 points per game and Ben Nemmers is supplying 12.3 points per game. Adam Kennedy has hit 21 of 27 field goals for 78 percent and Hedin has made eight of 15 three-point baskets for 53 percent. The Bison has hit 316 of 664 field goals for 48 percent, including 81 of 220 three-point field goals for 37 percent. The Bison has made 211 of
301 free throws for 70 percent. The Bison are outrebounding opponents by a slight margin, 36.5 to 36.2 per game. The Bison average 77.0 per game while opponents score 71.4 per game. NDSU has outscored opponents, 924 to 857, including a 463 to 401 scoring advantage in the first half and a 461-456 margin in the second half. The Bison have a 6-2 record at the Bison Sports
Arena where they are trying for their 29th winning home court record in the past 30 years. NDSU is 320-98 (.767) in 31 years at the Bison Sports Arena (since 1970-71). HALL OUT FOR THE YEAR: Senior guard Gary Hall suffered a season-ending injury earlier this month and has been lost for the year. NDSU has regained the services of junior guard Scott Majkrzak (6-1, West Fargo, N.D.) and senior center Ben Wilson (6-11, Florence, Ore.). Majkrzak missed eight games due to a foot injury that required surgery. Wilson saw some action in the
loss to North Dakota. He had missed two games since an ankle sprain on Dec. 19.

North Dakota's Rich Glas won his 400th game as a collegiate coach when the Sioux defeated North Dakota State, 75-67 at the Bison Sports Arena last Saturday night (Jan. 6). Glas is 400-234 (.631) in 23 years of coaching. Glas is 245-126 (.660) at North Dakota. He had an 89-44 (.669) record at Minnesota-Morris from 1974-79 and a 66-64 (.507) record at Willamette (Ore.)
from 1979-84. He entered this season ranked 19th nationally among NCAA Division II head coaches in wins (388) and was 50th nationally among active NCAA Division II head coaches in winning percentage (.628). Glas led North Dakota to a 23-8 overall record including 11-7 (3rd) in the NCC. The Fighting Sioux defeated South Dakota State, 73-67, in the first round of the
North Central Regional before losing to Metro State, 82-58 in the second round.
North Dakota State's Greg McDermott is in his first season as head basketball coach for the Bison. McDermott has a 9-3 record, including a 2-3 mark in the NCC. McDermott has been a collegiate head coach for seven years with a 125-56 record. He guided Wayne State (Neb.) to a 116-53 record in six season, including four consecutive 20-win seasons and consecutive NCAA
regional appearances in 1999 and 2000. He was an assistant at North Dakota for five season before taking the Wayne State position.
THIS AND THAT ON SOUTH DAKOTA BASKETBALL
FOSTER NAMED NCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jimmie Foster, a 6-4 forward on the South Dakota men's basketball team, has been named North Central Conference Player of the Week, according to an announcement today (January 8, 2001) by the conference office. Foster, a junior college transfer from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, averaged 26 points and 6.5 rebounds in leading the Coyotes (11-2, 5-1 in the NCC) to wins over Northern Colorado (80-74, Jan. 5) and Nebraska-Omaha (83-70, Jan. 6). Originally of Milwaukee, Wisc., Foster made 18 of 24 field goals for a blistering 75 percent and he also hit 15 of 18 free throws for 83 percent during the two games. Foster scored a career-high 30 points against Northern Colorado on Jan. 5, including converting 11 of 14 field goals (79 percent) and making seven of nine free throws. He also had six rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block in the Coyote win.
FOSTER, MARSHALL BREAK 30-POINT BARRIER IN CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS: For the first time since the 1990 season and only the second time in Coyote history have two different South Dakota men's basketball players scored 30 points in a game on consecutive nights. Jimmie Foster, a junior college transfer from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had his best game as a
Coyote with 30 points in the 80-74 triumph over Northern Colorado on Friday night. Foster, who is averaging 16.1 points per game, hit 11 of 14 field goals, 1 of 1 three-point field goals, and seven of nine free throws. Then on Saturday, junior point guard Paul Marshall, who transferred to South Dakota this fall from Sauk Valley Junior College in Dixon, Ill., had 33
points in leading the Coyotes to an 83-70 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 6. Marshall hit seven of 15 three-point field goals in registering the best scoring performance since former Coyote forward Charles Poe scored 33 vs. Morningside on Feb. 8, 1997. Foster now has five straight double figure scoring game and has nine on the season.
"THE GENERAL" SETS SIGHTS ON NISSEN'S ALL-TIME ASSIST MARK: With 111 assists (8.54 apg) after 12 games, Nate "The General" Tibbetts has passed Coyote great Barry Glanzer and moved into second place on the career assists chart. Glanzer, had 566 assists during 1978-82. Rick Nissen, who starred for the Coyotes from 1972-76, is the all-time Coyote assist leaders with 598 (1972-76). Interestingly, all three - Tibbetts, Glanzer and Nissen - were all-state guards in South Dakota. A year ago, Tibbetts set the Coyotes' assist-season record with 216. He also set an NCC season record with 164 assists during conference play.
TIBBETTS MOVES INTO FIFTH PLACE ALL-TIME IN CAREER STEALS: With his 26 steals this season, Tibbetts has 190 in his career and has moved into fourth place on the all-time list. During Friday night's game against Northern Colorado, Tibbetts passed former Coyote guard Fred Franklin, who had 187 steals from 1982-86. Ahead of Tibbetts on the all-time chart include Mike
Graves (1986-90), 3rd, 206, Randy Rosenquist (1990-94), 2nd, 207, and Tim Hatchett (1986-90), 1st, 208.
"SPECIAL K" MOVING UP THREE-POINT LISTS: With 175 three-point baskets in his career, Kudera has moved into fourth place all-time. He is 32 of 91 (35 percent) this season. Ahead of Kudera on the all-time chart is current Coyote volunteer coach Ben Ries (1996-2000), 290, Mike Graves, 274, and Randy Rosenquist (1990-94), 209.
MARSHALL, KUDERA ON 3-PT ROLL: Paul Marshall and Jeremy Kudera have each hit three-point baskets in all 13 of South Dakota's games. Marshall hit a team-season high of seven-three-pointers (one short of school record) vs. Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 6 (83-70 Coyote win). He has twice (Minnesota-Morris, Mount Marty) hit five three-point baskets in one game, made at least two three-pointers in eight of 11 games and has three or more in five games. Kudera has hit two or more three-point baskets in seven games and has a season and game-high of six three-pointers (Regis University). He has hit four or more three-pointers on three occasions this season.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Overall the Coyotes have six double double performances. Jason Barrow has recorded two double-doubles thus far this season. He has 13 points and 11 rebounds vs. Minnesota-Morris on Nov. 18 at the DakotaDome in a 117-58 Coyote win and had 13 points and 12 rebounds in an 86-36 win at home over Rochester College. Kudera also has a pair of double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds vs. St. Cloud and 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds vs. Nebraska-Omaha, Jan. 6. Tibbetts recorded a double double with 15 points and 10 assists in the Coyotes' 74-56 win over St. Cloud on Dec. 9. Jimmie Foster has a double double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds vs. SDSU (Dec. 30).
DOUBLE-FIGURES: Jimmie Foster has hit double figures in 10 of 13 games, including six in a row. He has a high of 30 points vs. Northern Colorado, Jan. 5. Foster has broken the 20-point mark on four occasions and has two double figure rebound games. Kudera has hit double figures in 10 of 13 games. He has three double figure rebound games. Tibbetts has five double figures assist games and has twice hit double figures in points. Paul Marshall has hit double figures in 10 of 13 games including his 33 point outburst on Jan. 6. Jason Barrow has eight double figure scoring games and two double figure rebound games.

WHEN OVER 100, COYOTES WIN: When South Dakota scored a 117-58 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Nov. 18, they improved their record to 23-4 when scoring 100 points during head coach Dave Boots' tenure.
SOUTH DAKOTA AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: (As of Jan. 4) South Dakota was listed in several top-10 individual and team categories in NCAA Division II basketball statistics. Nate Tibbetts was third in the nation in assists (8.2 apg), Jeremy Kudera was seventh in Free Throw Percentage at 92.5 percent. In the team categories, South Dakota was fourth in scoring margin (+21.8), and
8th in 3-point field goals per game (10.1 pg).

* Jeremy Kudera ranks second in free throw percentage at .913 (42-46), third in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and defensive rebounds at 5.77 (75), seventh in 3-point field goals made at 2.46 (32), and 11th in scoring (13.8 ppg),
* Nate Tibbetts is first in assists at 8.54 (111) and assist/turnover ratio at 4.44 (111 assists and 25 turnovers). He is sixth in steals at 2.08 (27) per game and eighth in field goal percentage at .565 (39-69).

RECORD 2ND HIGHEST POINT TOTAL IN GAME IN COYOTE HISTORY: The 117-58 win over Minnesota-Morris is the second highest point total scored by South Dakota in school history. That total is only exceeded by the 128 points scored by the 1977-78 team vs. now defunct Westmar.
17 THREE POINTERS AGAINST MINN.-MORRIS SETS COYOTE RECORD: Earlier this season, South Dakota broke a school record when they knocked home 17 three-point baskets in the 117-58 win over Minnesota-Morris at the Quad State Classic in Morris, Minn. That effort broke the mark of 16 vs. Augustana (16-31) in 1991-92 and the 16 vs. North Dakota (16-44) in 1994-95.
COYOTE NUMBERS: South Dakota is averaging 83.7 points per game and allowing 63.8 to opponents, for a 19.9 scoring margin advantage. They have outscored its opponents by a 1,088 to 829 margin, including a 502 to 395 advantage in the first half and a 575 to 429 margin in the second half. The Coyotes have an 11 to 5 scoring margin in overtime. The Coyotes have hit 370 of 727 field goals for 51 percent, 127 of 301 three-point field goals for 42 percent, and 221 of 308 free throws for 72 percent. South Dakota is outrebounding opponents, 36.2 to 30.8 per game. South Dakota has 120 steals, 226 assists and 38 blocked shots. BY HALF: South Dakota has led at halftime in 10 of 13 games. The Coyotes have trailed vs. Wayne State (39-32), Augustana (35-27) and South Dakota State (52-33). The Coyotes largest margin at half was a 57-31 lead vs. Minnesota-Morris. South Dakota has been outscored by only one team in the second half and that occurred during the loss to Southwest State. NATE TIBBETTS NAMED CO-NCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN DECEMBER: Nate Tibbetts, a senior point guard on the South Dakota men's basketball team, was named North Central Conference Co-Player of the Week (Dec. 11), according to an announcement by the conference office. Tibbetts, a native of Sioux Falls, averaged 11 points and 11 assists in leading South Dakota to a pair of North
Central Conference wins on Friday (Dec. 8) and Saturday (Dec. 9). South Dakota swept past Minnesota State -Mankato, 80-57(Dec. 8), and St. Cloud State, 74-56 (Dec. 9) in their home NCC openers at the DakotaDome. During the weekend, Tibbetts hit eight of nine field goals (.888), and six of eight free throws (.750) while recording nine steals. Tibbetts had seven points,
12 assists, and six steals vs. Minnesota State-Mankato on Dec. 8. The following night (Dec. 9), Tibbetts, who prepped at Sioux Falls Roosevelt, had 15 points, including six of six shooting from the floor, to go with 10 assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
IN OVERTIME: The Coyotes are 5-11 in overtime games during the Boots' tenure, including a 86-80 win in the season opener over Wayne State at the Quad State Classic Nov. 17 in Morris, Minn.
NONCONFERENCE STREAK AT 54: South Dakota has won 54 straight nonconference home basketball games dating back to the 1991-92 season. In the third game of that season, the Coyotes fell in overtime to Gustavus-Adolphus, 91-85 at the DakotaDome. Dave Boots is 71-1 in home nonconference games since he came to South Dakota in 1988. South Dakota has won 32 of its past 33 nonconference games. A 30-game nonconference winning steak was snapped when South Dakota lost to Southwest State, 75-66, Dec. 1.
