VERMILLION, S.D. (JANUARY 10, 2002) -- The University of South Dakota men's distance medley relay broke a 23-year old record and junior Brianne Vette set a pentathlon record during the first day of the Bill Hillenbrand Meet at the DakotaDome on Friday.
Competition will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday with field events. Running events begin at 9 a.m. in the Dome.
Brianne Vette (Spearfish, S.D.) scored 3,492 points to set a new women's pentathlon record at South Dakota. She broke the mark of 3,453 points set by Tonya Kneifl in 1998. Sarah Hoffman (Mitchell, S.D.) was third with 3,143 points.
The men's distance medley relay (Scott Ellwanger, Joel Solomonson, Shane Roder and Adam Lindahl) ran a 10:05.67 to break the mark of 10:11.02 set in 1980 (Greg Willey, David Carr, Pat Sand and Dan O'Brien).
The South Dakota men's team also captured a title in the 4x200 (Eric Kittles, Pat Belling, Shawn Smith, and Merritt Groh) in 1:31.19 and freshman Tony Turgeon (Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the 5,000 meter run (15:23.00).
Paul Brozik (Winner, S.D.) was second in the men's indoor pentathlon with 3,661 points. In the pentathlon, Brozik went 23'11 3/4 to provisionally qualify for the long jump at the NCAA Division II championships to be held later this year at Boston, Mass.
For the women, Laura Schmitz (Jefferson, S.D.) was second in the 600-meter run (1:45.56) and Amanda Muller (Schuyler, Neb.) finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 15.31 m.
