Coyotes total 10 event wins at SDSU Holiday Open

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota track and field picked up 10 event wins, including two by Matayah YellowMule, at the SDSU Holiday Open in Brookings Friday.
 
In the women's long jump, YellowMule took the title in 18-8 ¾ (5.71m), followed by Rylie Hansen in 18-3 (5.56m) in second. Mae Siegel took fourth in 17-9 ½ (5.42m). YellowMule followed that performance with a 38-9 ¾ (11.83m) in the triple jump for the event win, followed by three Coyotes in the top four. Siegel took second at 38-5 (11.71m), a personal best. Freshmen Kenya Harris (37-7 ¼) and Hansen (35-9 ½) round out the top four.
 
On the track for the Coyote men, Ethan Baessler won the men's 60-meter title with a personal best 6.72 seconds. That time places him second alone in school history. He took the top qualifying spot in 6.75 seconds as well. Jaden Guthmiller took ninth at 7.01 seconds in the prelims.
 
In the 60 hurdles, the Mikael Grace and Jaden Damiano took first and second for the Yotes. Grace broke the eight second barrier for the first time in the prelims and ran 7.89 in the finals for first. Damiano ran 7.96 for second. Aidan Hedderman made the final and ran 8.29 to place seventh.
 
Alexis Pagel won the women's mile in 5:14.09, placing ahead of Sarah VanDeBerg in second with a time of 5:16.21. Kinsey Evans took fourth in 5:24.27. In the 3,000, Taylor Byerley ran a personal best 10:04.66 for the event win. Alexus Sindelar followed in 10:07.55 for second. Peyton Svehla took seventh in 10:34.47 and Maci Steuber ninth in 10:28.96.
 
In field events, South Dakota swept the high jump titles, with Landon Olson taking the men's title at 6-10 ¾ (2.10m). Joe Lynch took second at 6-8 3/4 (2.05m). Maddie Olson took the women's title at 5-8 (1.73m).
 
In the men's pole vault, Beau Karst took the top spot with a height of 16-10 ¾ (5.15m), followed by Charles Cruse and Dylan Curtis at 16-4 ¾ (5.00m), Wyatt Stewart at 15-11 (4.85m), and Dutch Neuweiler at 15-5 (4.70m).
 
In the women's pole vault, Ciana Stiefel and Eliza Aitken both cleared 12-5 ½ (3.80m) for the top spot. Kailee Swart cleared 11-11 ¾ for fifth.
 
Kali Ringstmeyer made her Coyote debut in fashion, making the 60-meter finals and running 7.61 in the final to place third. That time is fifth in school history in the event. Two Coyotes made the 60 hurdles final, led by Sophie Amin's third place time of 8.63. Brei Christoffer, competing for the first time as a Coyote, placed seventh in 8.98.
 
In the women's 200-meter championship division, Ringstmeyer ran 25.25 for seventh, followed by Jacie Rexilius in eighth at 25.38. Claudia Werner took 10th in the 200-meters in 26.16. Berkeley Engelland and Ellie Thomas took fifth and seventh in the 800-meters, running 2:15.76 and 2:16.39 respectively.
 
Moriah Knapp recorded a third place finish with a personal best 18:35.26 in the 5,000-meters. Five Coyotes placed inside the top 10 in the women's 400-meters. Avery Winter (58.24), Emma Marshall (58.45), Olivia Thiele (58.76), Brandy Pulse (58.78), Claudia Werner (59.00) took sixth through 10th.
 
Tommy Hensley had a strong race in the mile to open his indoor season, running 4:18.17. Townsend Barton added a fourth place finish in the 400-meters in 50.66. The men's 200-meter championship division featured Guthmiller, who placed sixth in 22.69. Mikael Grace ran 34.84 in the 300-meters for fourth.
 
Carson Lauterbach took third in the 3,000-meters, running 8:53.29. Trevor Thomsen took sixth in 9:01.00.
 
South Dakota had three top 10 finishes in the men's shot put, led by Brandon Vander Sluis in second at 56-8 ½ (17.28m) and Tristan Gray in third at 55-0 ¼ (16.77m). Tyler Laughlin took seventh at 51-5 (15.67m).
 
In relays, Evan Janzen, Braxton Smith, Damiano, and Jett Tingelhoff ran 3:24.29 for fifth in the 4x400. For the Coyote women, the team of Emma Marshall, Thomas, Harris, and Engelland ran 3:59.8 for sixth.

The Coyotes are back in action on January 17 inside the DakotaDome for the USD Alumni Meet.
