Katie Freeman Becomes First Coyote Soccer Student-Athlete to Earn Academic All-American Honors

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Katie Freeman of The University of South Dakota women's soccer team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American third team which was released on Tuesday. Freeman becomes the first-ever USD women's soccer student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors.

Freeman, a senior pre-medicine and biology major with a 3.942 GPA, was also named to the Daktronics All-Central Region second team and the All-NCC second team. In addition, Freeman was selected to the Academic All-NCC squad for the third straight year. A team captain for the Coyotes, Freeman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Women's Soccer Academic All-District team for the second straight year in 2007.

Freeman, who led the Coyotes to a 7-10-3 record, had three assists, four goals and 11 total points this season.

One of the league's top defensive players, she played in 79 career games with 74 starts. She scored seven career goals with six career assists and 18 total points.

During her career, Freeman led USD to a 46-29-5 record and a share of the NCC title in 2004.
