FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - - Ramsey Fitzsimmons recorded a 10th-place finish to lead The University of South Dakota women's cross country team at the Chile Pepper Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Coyote women had a solid run against their toughest competition of the 2008 campaign as they finished 19th out of 39 teams. The Coyote men's cross country team also had a good day against a stout field as they also finished 19th out of 30 teams.
Fitzsimmons(Jr., Yankton, S.D.) was 10th out of 306 women's runners, finishing the 6K course with a time of 20:45. She was less than six seconds out of eighth place. Kelsey Maloney (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished 68th with a time of 22:21, while Heather Kuhlmann (So., Nebraska City, Neb.) was 143rd with a time of 23:25. Abby Duling (So, Gregory, S.D.) had a solid run to finish 150th after crossing the line with a time of 23:30. Jessica Lundgren (Sr., Truman, Minn.)added a time of 23:41 to finish 162nd to round out the Coyotes' team scoring.
The Coyote women ended with 511 points and finished ahead of several Division I teams at the meet, including Tulane, Nebraska, Oral Roberts, LSU and Missouri-Kansas City. Texas Tech won the women's field at 72 points.
Rob Gregoire (Jr., Wakonda, S.D.) led the Coyote men by placing 89th with a time of 32:06 on the 10K course. Sean Fitzsimmons (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) was 106th after posting a time of 32:25. Andrew Duba (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished 130th at 32:55.07, followed by Matt Bump (So., Pierre, S.D.) in 186th at 34:29 and Nick Baere (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) in 194th at 34:45. A field of 257 runners competed in the men's race.
The Coyote men, who ended at 519 points, finished ahead of Division I programs Missouri-Kansas City, Louisiana-LaFayette, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Centenary. Texas Tech was first at 52.
The Coyotes' next competition is set for Saturday, Oct. 25 when they compete at the Mount Marty College Invitational in Yankton, S.D.
