Las Vegas -- The South Dakota women's tennis team dropped a pair of duals in Las Vegas on Friday, falling to Idaho State, 6-1 and Southern Utah, 7-0. The Coyotes fell to 8-10 on the year.

Idaho State won a tough 9-8 decision at No. 1 doubles to secure the team doubles point in the Coyotes' first match of the day, and won five of six singles matches, including by injury default at No. 3 singles when South Dakota's Shadi Soleymani was injured.

"We lost a very competitive doubles point," South Dakota coach Malcolm Gilreath said. "It came down to No. 1 doubles; we had a couple of match points that we let slip away. Idaho State fought hard and won the doubles point and the momentum went towards them in singles."

At No. 3 doubles, junior Ysabel Nunez (Oakville, Ontario) and freshman Maddy Warder (Sioux City, Iowa) teamed up for an 8-5 win. Sophomore Marina Kiefer (Zurich, Switzerland) recorded an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win over Laura Severino at No. 5 singles.

Against Southern Utah, the Coyotes were without Soleymani, who was injured in the match against Idaho State, and had to take losses by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

The Coyotes did win a match at No. 2 doubles when junior Alena Sergeychik (Moscow, Russia) and Kiefer teamed up for an 8-3 win.

"We played one of the top teams in the Summit League," Gilreath said. "They're a very well-coached team and they have some very good freshmen that are very strong players."

South Dakota concludes the trip with a match against Seattle on Saturday. The match begins at 3 p.m. Central time in Las Vegas.
