BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—South Dakota guard Brandon Bos scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half in helping the Coyotes win a 68-66 contest against Bakersfield Sunday at Icardo Center. Bos has scored 20 points or more in three of his last four games.
South Dakota (2-5) overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to win its second game in a row. Casey Kasperbauer scored a season-high 18 points in earning his second start of the season. His fourth 3-pointer of the game completed a 9-0 run that gave USD a 65-61 lead with 1:23 remaining. Kasperbauer was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Bakersfield (1-5) got 14 points from both Kevin Mays and Dashawn Richmond but was denied its second straight win. Starting big man Aly Ahmed picked up two consecutive technical fouls with 13:39 left in the second half with his team maintaining a 48-36 lead. Bos made all four technical free throws to cut the lead to eight points. Less than three minutes later, South Dakota was within five points.
The Roadrunners built their lead by going on a 14-0 run late in the first half and taking a 40-29 advantage into the break. Kasperbauer scored all eight South Dakota points in the final nine minutes of the first half.
Bakersfield made 7 of 24 shots in the second half after shooting 55 percent (16 of 29) in the first. The Coyotes shot 38 percent (20 of 52) from the field during the game, but hit eight three-pointers and made 20 of 29 free throws.
The Roadrunners turned it over twice on possessions to tie or take the lead in the final 40 seconds. Kasperbauer made two free throws with 19 seconds left that made it 67-63. Jaylin Airington countered with a bucket in the paint with nine seconds left that brought Bakersfield within two at 67-65. Airington had eight points off the bench for the Roadrunners.
Bos was fouled with four seconds to go and made 1 of 2 free throws. The Coyotes chose to foul Brent Wrapp instead of giving Bakersfield a chance at a 3. Wrapp made the first free throw, intentionally missed the second and USD guard Trey Norris rebounded to secure the win.
Norris, who had nine points, accounted for all of the bench scoring for the Coyotes, who had been getting 25 from their bench on average coming into the contest. USD guard Tyler Larson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Larson also handed out five assists.
South Dakota will go for three in a row Tuesday at Cal State Northridge.
