Box Score Dec. 28, 2014

Box Score

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota junior guard Casey Kasperbauer made seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points in leading the Coyotes to an 84-60 win against Milwaukee Sunday inside the DakotaDome.

It was the third straight win for South Dakota (6-8), which begins Summit League play Friday at home against Omaha.

Kasperbauer made seven triples for the second time this season. He was 6 of 6 from downtown in the second half. When the barrage ended, South Dakota had extended a 33-23 halftime lead to 71-49 with five minutes to go.

Coyote big man James Hunter added 13 second-half points, included two one-hand jams, and finished with a career-best 15. He also had five rebounds in 16 minutes of work. Tyler Larson had 12 first-half points and finished with 22.

Matt Tiby had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead Milwaukee (5-9), an NCAA Tournament team after winning the Horizon League Tournament a season ago. Akeem Springs had 11 points and five boards off the bench. Senior guard Steve McWhorter, the team's leading scorer and rebounder entering the contest, had seven points – all in the second half – and no rebounds.

South Dakota closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a double-digit lead and never let it get close from there. Milwaukee shot 29 percent (9 of 31) from the field in the first half and 37 percent (22 of 59) for the game. The Panthers were 5 of 24 from long range.

The Coyotes made 19 of 34 shots in the second half and didn't record a turnover in the stanza until the closing seconds. South Dakota made better than half its shots (32 of 63) for the first time this season and out-rebounded the Panthers 40-30.

Friday's game against Omaha will mark the first time the Coyotes will have played back-to-back home games this season. After Omaha, South Dakota will play five of its next six on the road before returning home to play seven of its final 10.
